The individual who is growing is constantly challenging one's self. This takes courage. When a person steps into a new and better situation they can't help but have an uneasy feeling of inadequacy, and some people never learn how to overcome this fear. The pleasures of growth and development require effort, self-discipline, and a certain amount of pain. Suffering is caused because people do not know how to cope with said pain effectively. Most people exhibit strong tendencies to continue with their bad habits as they have in the past because they are fearful of the pain it will take to change.

Self-knowledge and self-understanding are two of the most important components towards becoming a confident, healthy individual. When a person understands one's self they will understand their basic needs and their true motivation and learn to behave in a manner, which will satisfy said needs. Self-understanding will also enable one to understand and relate to people more effectively.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

Successful therapy, regardless of the particular method used, seems to help the patient by providing greater understanding, insight, self-knowledge, and perception to reality. This confirms the fact that mental health is synonymous with a good perception of reality. As people become more conscious of their own motivations, their needs, their desires and their hang-ups, they seem to develop a greater ability to solve their life problems. As people become more conscious of themselves, their solutions to their life problems become easier and require less effort.
