Have you ever thought, "I just want to be happy..." or "If I could just have some peace in my life." What is standing between you...and a happier, more peaceful you? This is what we explore in counseling. My favorite part of counseling is working with people to discover the best way to help, and to teach skills to help people to be their best. The approaches to counseling that I use depend on the person. Sometimes it seems that our "stinking thinking" can be the culprit that stands in between us, and peace and happiness. For many people, learning breathing and relaxation to make physiological changes in the body can help us cope more effectively and feel better. Others find that simply giving voice to their problems leads to a solution. The most effective model of counseling is the approach that will help you.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Do your research and keep an open mind. Explore websites such as GoodTherapy.org to help you make an informed decision about whether or not to begin therapy. Utilize the web to explore therapist profiles and websites, and take note of any who resonate with you. Sometimes exploring these resources can lead you to either find solutions, or guide you to a therapist who can help you with what you are experiencing. if you are still on the fence, consider some of these thoughts: How long have I been struggling with this on my own? How severe is the problem? How much is it affecting my everyday life? Does the idea of going to counseling keep coming up for me (either because I keep thinking of it, or because others are suggesting it)? Finally, listen to your intuition.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

We all have our strengths as well as our challenges. The question is not whether or not we will have challenges, but how we handle them when they arise. Most of the time, people are doing their best with the skills, knowledge, resources, and abilities that they possess. Sometimes we are able to resolve problems on our own or with the help of family or friends. Other times it seems like we just can't break through that barrier, and need more (knowledge, skills, resources, abilities). This is where therapy can help.
