My Approach to Helping
I believe that the approach to each client should be based on that client. As such, I pull from a variety of models to customize treatment for each case. In so many cases, clients come in first wanting to just be heard, so being present with them and fully attentive to them allows that and helps build trust and rapport. I believe in giving homework to clients so that the therapeutic intervention is extended to the space between sessions. This makes treatment more effective and gives the client tools to use in the future so they can better manage new issues on their own.

My Role as a Therapist

My role as the therapist depends on the client. Sometimes clients are mired in their issues and are so overwhelmed that they can't think clearly about how to find a resolution. In this case, as the therapist, I help them untangle the threads so they can begin to take the lead in finding the resolution that works best for them. Sometimes I can be simply a sounding board when a client has a lot that needs to be said and their biggest need is to simply be heard. In this case, most of what I do is to listen with a bit of questioning for clarification or to investigate something specific.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

I have been where they are. It is a difficult thing for a person to feel that things have gotten enough beyond them that they require a professional to help. However, even making the call for the first session provides a sense of relief, a sense that you are actually doing something to address your troubles.... and you are! That sense is further increased as you complete your first session and find that there is no shame in seeking help.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

It's probably not realistic or ethical to put a number on the sessions that might be required to help a client. I worry when a client comes in and clearly believes that one or two sessions will do the trick. So much depends on the client's frequency of visits, time between visits, willingness to do homework, and the depth and complexity of the actual issues. For instance, treating someone for work stress during their 'busy season' isn't as complicated as working with a newly blended family with custody issues, substance abuse, and extended family issues. In the end, though, the when the client agrees that their goals have been achieved, therapy can be concluded.
