My Approach to Helping

We have what it takes to tackle life's challenges within ourselves and with the support of our family and friends. Our capacity to preserver and problem-solve is astounding. And there are times when we lose track of our capacities; even lose faith in ourselves and our relationships. We get stuck in bad habits of thinking, feeling and interacting with the world and distressing patterns replay themselves like a broken record. We can get by, living like this, but we want something more. Some people discover that spending time with one who sits outside his or her day-to-day stressors and offers non-judgmental listening and candid feedback can help break these patterns. Good therapy helps us sort things out, rediscover what is important to us, and learn or re-learn ways of getting along with ourselves and others. In short, it helps illuminate paths back to our confidence, our faith in ourselves and our ability to create meaningful relationships. I provide this help to adults, adolescents and families who are facing a wide range of obstacles: depression and anxiety, anger and withdrawal, wandering attention and poor social skills, parent-adolescent conflicts as well as co-parenting struggles. I have a special interest in divorce, remarriage and stepfamily relations, and in helping parents become more grounded and balanced in their homes (I incorporate the Love & Logic approach in my parent support work). My approach -- which is in line with the description outlined at the Good Therapy website -- is non-pathologizing, empowering and collaborative. I draw upon recent discoveries in brain and body physiology -- the bio-mechanical processes that underlie our moods and our thinking -- and help you move to a standpoint of curiosity and compassion for yourself and others. From this place you can see things more clearly, tap into your confidence and creativity and get back on track. I offer a new treatment approach, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, which uses horses to help people learn about themselves and others. These sessions take place at ClearWind Farm, located 12 minutes from Mebane, and within 30 minutes of Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough and Burlington. Research has shown that at least 30 percent of success in psychotherapy is dependent upon the comfort and connection the client feels with the therapist. To find that out, there is no alternative but to meet the therapist and experience first hand if you feel a good fit or not. Like many therapists, I do not charge for the first session if you decide afterwards you do not feel this fit" and you prefer to seek out another therapist.
