My Approach to Helping
My approach to helping people is collaborative and casual and is based upon the assumption that engagement, trust, positive thinking, and process are powerful contributors to change. I create treatment plans that help guide the journey and mark progress and achievements. I believe in the effectiveness of psychotherapy and the importance of varied perspectives. I utilize the unique qualities that my clients bring to my office and build upon strengths already present, even if my clients are unaware of them. I try to learn from each client and am often educated as much by my youngest clients as by their parents. I value input from additional family members and believe in the power of the village.
I also strongly believe that "stuckness" is not inevitable or permanent and that "aha moments" do occur!
More Info About My Practice
I conduct comprehensive psychological evaluations with children and adolescents to assess learning disabilities/ADHD/academic achievement and social/emotional functioning. I provide in-school observations and a thorough parent feedback session at the conclusion of the evaluation.
Although I do not accept insurance, I can provide a receipt to submit for reimbursement. At times I am also able to reduce my fee so please ask if that is a requirement for you.
I have extensive experience with child victims of sexual abuse and forensic assessments and I conduct Forensic Evaluations when sexual abuse is suspected. I also have extensive experience testifying in cases involving child sexual abuse and may be available as an expert witness. I am also trained in Collaborative Family Law as a Divorce Coach/Child Specialist.
On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
Most people benefit, in some way, from participating in psychotherapy. We rarely take the time or energy to focus on ourselves and that exercise alone can lead to very positive results. Many times, successes in psychotherapy are just a matter of seeing something in a different way or focusing on a strength you were unaware you possessed.
Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
Many of my clients have told me about negative experiences with other therapists. Since psychotherapy depends so heavily on the relationship between client and therapist, it sometimes takes more than one try to find the right fit. As with other relationships, sometimes the timing is wrong, or the perspectives are different, or even the goals may vary. It's important to pay attention to your instincts when looking for the best therapist for you. Keep in mind that the person for your may be different from your friend's or neighbor's for a variety of reasons. Again, as with other relationships - try not to give up after the first negative experience!
