Unraveling the Knots: Trauma and Resilience in Adopted Children

This continuing education webinar is designed for mental health professionals interested in expanding their understanding and skillset to improve the well-being of adopted children who have experienced trauma.

During this 2-hour webinar, Dr. Glenda Clare will discuss types of adoption, adoptees who are most likely to have experienced trauma and why (risk factors), the impact of trauma on adoptees, behaviors associated with trauma, and pathways to healing. Dr. Clare will examine clinical interventions mental health clinicians can use to support adoptees who have experienced trauma and their families and to build resilience.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health clinicians:

  1. Define key terms related to trauma and adoption and define trauma using DSM-5 criteria. 
  2. Describe how trauma impacts the brain and influences behavior.
  3. Discuss interventions mental health clinicians can use to support adoptees who have experienced trauma and their families.

How the Web Conference Works

Before the scheduled event, all registered attendees will be sent a reminder email from GoodTherapy with specific instructions on how to log in to the web conference center, as well as links to optional handout materials if applicable.

To attend the event, registered attendees will log in to the web conference center using a computer or device (smartphone or tablet with internet access) and calling into the teleconference line on a phone. Attendees will be able to ask live audio questions via phone and/or submit text chat questions via their computer or device. Attendees who are logged in to the event center will be able to see the live streaming video and/or document sharing. Alternatively, attendees may dial into the teleconference line only, though attendees dialing in by phone only will be unable to ask questions.

At the conclusion of this event, participants will receive an email with information about how to request a CE certificate in your GoodTherapy Account. To confirm attendance, participants must enter the start and end codes announced at the beginning and end of the live presentation. Participants will also be prompted to complete an online survey evaluating the event. Participants will need to complete this online survey within six days after the event. Once completed, participants will be able to download a copy of their CE certificate instantly.

Meet the Presenter

Glenda Clare, PhD, LCMHC, LCAS

Glenda Clare, PhD, LCMHC, LCAS

Dr. Glenda Clare is a licensed behavioral health clinician and community health practitioner. She practices in North Carolina and provides services to individuals, families, and groups.

Glenda Clare has worked as Public Health Liaison for the NC HIV/STD Branch, Substance Abuse Counselor for Duke’s Family Care Program, Program Associate for National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, NIDA Liaison and CHATT Center Manager for Danya Institute, and the Principle Research Associate for the National Development and Research Institute (NDRI). She advocates on behalf of grandfamilies (grandparents and other family members raising a relative’s child when the birth parent is unwilling or unable) and currently serves as the North Carolina representative to the Generations United GrAND Voices Network.

Dr. Clare earned a bachelors degree in the interdisciplinary study of Community Health Education and Media Arts from the University of South Carolina, a masters degree in Agency Counseling specializing in substance abuse and career counseling from North Carolina Central University, and a doctorate in Counselor Education specializing in addiction and family counseling from College of William and Mary.
