My Approach to Helping
I specialize in the mind body treatment of of chronic pain and related physical conditions. My approach is rooted in the latest neuroscientific research that shifted our understanding of how chronic pain is processed in the brain. We now know that many pain conditions previously believed to be structural or related to tissue damage are often caused by a psychophysiologic processes rooted in our brains danger response system. This is know as neuroplastic or neurocircuit pain. Pain and other uncomfortable symptoms are created and maintained as part the brains instinctive role to protect us from a perceived physical or psychological threat. I use Evidence-based interventions including Pain Reprocessing Therapy and Emotional Awareness and Expressive therapy. These approaches incorporates psychoeducation, mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure-response prevention techniques, safety reappraisal and emotional expression to help clients to break the pain-fear cycle by responding to everyday triggers from a space of safety. thus deactivating the pain pathway.
It is essential to note that though the pain is addressed psychologically this does not mean the symptoms are not real. In fact brain imagery studies have demonstrated that the pain and other symptoms are quite real. Examples of conditions for which mind body therapy is helpful include most cases of chronic back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia symptoms, chronic stomach issues, repetitive strain injury, headaches, and other forms of chronic pain.
