My Approach to Helping
Hi. My name is Debbie Kirkwood. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist. I have a master’s degree in psychology and a Ph.D. in Human Services. I retired from the military of 21 years and went right into the counseling field and I have loved every day of it. It’s true what they say, “if you love your work, you will never work another day.” That’s because helping others is something that I love to do. Having been in the mental health field for I have worked with many people of every age group and from various backgrounds and cultures. When I meet with clients who are highly motivated to improve their quality of life, their personal and professional relationships, and to realize their potential, it reinforces my enthusiasm and commitment to helping others.
My approach to therapy depends on the client’s presenting issues and their motivation for change. Each person is different and responds to different approaches. I believe in meeting the client where they are and not where I want them to be. Reaching out for help is a very important step and I applaud your willingness to take this journey with me.
A majority of my clients are dealing with the following issues: Job stress, relationship stress, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and other life stressors. My approach to counseling includes a variety of modalities and strategies. However, I am very experienced in cognitive and behavioral therapies (CBT). My objective is to help individuals and couples who want to feel better about their life, relationships, and self-worth.
I have gained much insight from my years of experience working in the counseling field. We all have the ability to rise to challenge to make the most out of our sessions. If you are ready to do the work, I am ready to help you on this journey!
