My Approach to Helping
If your relationship is stagnant, frustrating, or falling apart, I can help. Couple therapy can be very effective when you are working with a therapist who has specialized training in this type of work. I am passionate and skilled when it comes to working with couples. I obtained my Masters degree in Counseling from Portland State University, with a specialty in Marriage, Couple and Family Therapy. I have been certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and I have additional, long-term training in Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples, the Gottman Method, Emotion Focused Therapy for Individuals, Internal Family Systems, and Motivational Interviewing.
One of my goals in therapy is to help people break dysfunctional cycles and replace old, worn-out ways of interacting with more intentional and compassionate ones. In addition to teaching new communication and life skills, I help couples expand and reorganize their emotional responses in a way that helps increase empathy and understanding, engenders self-growth, and brings greater intimacy and joy to the relationship. I am happy to work with couples on all ends of the spectrum - from early relationship/premarital counseling, to relationship tune-ups, to rebuilding relationships that are in serious jeopardy, to helping separated/divorced couples navigate challenges.

Indeed, I also work with individuals. I'm skilled at helping individuals who are struggling with grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, lack of motivation, low self-esteem, or self-defeating behaviors. I'm also experienced with working with people who are feeling challenged or overwhelmed by work, finances, and relationship or family issues. Whatever your concerns, we'll work together to improve your life. I am warm and nonjudgmental, yet interactive and engaged. Your time with me will provide a safe space to explore your personal goals, gain insight on what is most meaningful to you, and work around any difficulties that may be holding you back or dis-empowering you.
I would love to be able to work with you as an individual interested in improving your relationship with yourself or with another, as a newly bonded couple looking to improve your communication skills, or as a couple/family who is, perhaps, feeling frustrated and hopeless as you struggle to hold your bond together. I believe that one person has tremendous power to change the dynamics of their interpersonal interactions, so even if your partner isn't interested, or your family members refuse to join you in therapy, there is still a lot you can do.

In addition to my counseling background, I have a Ph.D. in Science. I teach Biology (Allied Health) at Portland State University, and have discovered that my knowledge of both psychology and biology provides me with unique and powerful tools as a counselor. In fact, I strongly believe in the interpersonal neurobiology concept of 'inspire to rewire' the brain via a supportive and nurturing therapeutic relationship.
I have been able to help many individuals, families, and couples create healthier, more satisfying relationships with themselves and others.
