My Approach to Helping

Life can be hard! If you're feeling overwhelmed, worried, low on hope, or discouraged; If you're being tossed about by your thoughts and emotions; If you're struggling to take the next step and don’t see a clear path forward, don't give up. Life's problems, including mental health issues, are real, common, and treatable. Our therapy sessions are a place for you to lay your burdens down and be refreshed. In therapy with me, every single part of you is welcome. Each of us is different and multifaceted. I'm interested in seeing the real you shine and in helping you see it too. With God on our team, you can step into hope!

Good therapy coupled with God’s Grace can transform hard places and roadblocks into circumstances that can be addressed and moved through and beyond. You can grow and flourish. You can live your best life. No matter what you're facing, there is a way forward. You're not the one person who has to stay stuck. There is help and hope for YOU!

As a seasoned therapist, I've worked with people from all walks of life facing all kinds of troubles. It has been my great privilege to witness hearts mended, minds healed, and relationships restored. In my own life, God has restored joy and purpose from pain. I'd be so honored to help you find that as well.

I entered the mental health field in 1994. In 1998, I became licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). In 2022, I became an Out-of-State Telehealth Provider for Florida. In my career I’ve served on professional counseling boards and presented at conferences. I’ve designed multiple therapeutic intervention programs for K-12 schools and have written grants to fund them. At UAB I’ve served on the Master’s in Counseling program admissions committee, co-taught master’s level counseling classes, helped develop the Community Counseling Clinic, presented at continuing education events for other LPCs, and obtained certification as a Psychometrist (practitioner in psychological testing).

I’ve taken Seminary classes in Biblical Counseling and am currently pursuing advanced certification in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) at the internationally acclaimed Beck Institute in Philadelphia. I’m a mental health blogger and speaker. I’m a member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies and am on Alabama‘s leadership team for Moms in Prayer International. I will always go the extra mile to keep learning and serving because I know God has a good plan for you and that good therapy can help you step into it.

More Info About My Practice

Still Waters Counseling and Education Center exists to bring help, hope and healing through professional counseling and community education. Life can be hard. Things that happen in the world around us, the thoughts we have and the problems we encounter can easily feel like too much. We may feel overwhelmed, worried, low on hope. We may struggle to find purpose and meaning or to know how to take the next step when we can’t see the way forward.

We live in a world full of confusions, temptations, distractions and what seem like roadblocks trying to trip us up and impede our progress. But take hope! There is a way. And we want to help you navigate to a place of healing. Still Waters uses the very best tools in behavioral science combined with God’s holy Word to help rediscover who we are and the path we were made to take. We want our clients to discover how to break free from messages and lies we have been told or that we tell ourselves and learn to be free to live our best life.

Life’s challenges, including mental health problems, are real, common and treatable. Scripture and science agree that our minds can be a battlefield. Over time we can develop faulty thought patterns, unhealthy mental habits, and unsound beliefs. We may need help to become grounded in the Truth that, "we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10).

In Jeremiah 29:11 we are given the assurance that God has “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Still Waters wants to help you win your battles and restore you to the life you were meant to live. You are the only you. No one else can do what God made you specifically to do. Still Waters wants to help you rediscover your best you- the person you were made to be. Romans 8 verse 31 reminds us that “God is for us” and verse 37 tells us that we are more than conquerors! Battles in our mind, our body, our relationships, our circumstances will occur in this world. With proven therapeutic strategies that work and with God on our team we can go forward in confidence and with overflowing hope.

Our message at Still Waters is for everyone. God has a best life for you. He gives us tools, techniques and teachings to renew our minds and change the way we think. When we discover the ways our thoughts and behaviors undermine our progress, we can move toward health and away from habit. We can find the life we were meant to live when we change the thoughts and beliefs that keep us in a state of confusion, fear, worry, hopelessness, anger, resentment, bitterness, obsession, addiction, selfishness or other negative and self- defeating practices.

At Still Waters we value every person that reaches out to us. We are very honored that people trust us to hear their stories and be part of their lives. We strive to make each person who comes to us feel safe and cared for. We do this by listening intently with our head, heart and relying on God’s wisdom and discernment to understand and help in the best possible way. We strive to provide the most effective therapy available by using the best tools of behavioral science and the incomparable Sword of the Spirit (God‘s Word).

Our mission is to employ these methods to help people transform their lives for the better.
