My Approach to Helping

I have experience providing therapy for adult individuals who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depressive symptoms, relational difficulties, family issues, substance use, psychosis, and severe mental illnesses. My theoretical orientation is an integration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Solution Focused Therapy (SFT). CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts guide our emotions and behaviors.

Changing our negative thought patterns can ultimately create more positive thinking, increase self-worth, and promote better behavioral outcomes. DBT focuses on regulating emotions and teaching skills such as mindfulness and relaxation. The ability to regulate our emotions effectively allows us to engage and maintain productive relationships, improve interpersonal skills, manage difficult emotions, and decrease impulsive behaviors that are not productive . SFT explores areas of our lives that are going well and builds on a persons’ unique strengths and skills to problem solve. SFT is based on the idea that each person is the expert in their own life and therefore the solution to problems lies within the individual.
