My Approach to Helping

Overcoming my own adversity led to a passion for helping. Treatment needs to be tailored to the client, I collaborate with you, the expert of your own life, to identify issues and develop a plan to get unstuck.

Through the process, insight will develop, transforming arbitrary suffering into meaningful challenges. Together, we will define success and celebrate the milestones.

Expect a natural flowing, non-judgmental, and supportive interaction. Healing will start right away, knowing you have a plan to get better.

No longer accepting thoughts at face value, reality checking, restructuring distorted thoughts, and positive self-talk will become second-nature and flip the script in a meaningful way!

Therapy is a self-care activity, similar to working out. It produces a sense of fortitude and strength. Feeling heard, understood, and validated are essential to healing.

More Info About My Practice

The spirit of this practice is to offer the very best therapy and support available. I have been privileged to help countless individuals over the years, and from time to time, witnessed profound transformations.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Day after day, exhausted, waking up after barely sleeping, the burning sensation remains in your chest from the night before.

Thoughts trigger powerful sensations that make a strong latte feel like a sleeping pill.

The reality of a tortured soul, mustering just enough energy to face the day, remain on task and perform at work without falling behind. With a bit of good fortune, a day without a panic attack.

Anticipating the worst possible outcomes and dreading the future robs your spirit.

Recognizing defeat and feeling desperate for relief, it?s time to make a move.

I understand how frustrating it can be when thoughts, worries, and fears tyrannize the mind. The darkness is palpable. Toxic stress hormones make it nearly impossible to think objectively.

Fortunately, anxiety related issues respond well to treatment. With a bit of work, emotions get toned down and quality of life vastly improves.

Working together will be an empowering experience. We will reduce the intensity of emotions through processing and learning to challenge disturbing thoughts.

Negative thoughts wield power only when believed. Therapy skills extract the teeth from anxiety.

Learning that thoughts and feelings are volatile and not always accurate allows the mind to accept new narratives. After all, it isn't the events in life that cause distress, it's the way we think about them.

Learning techniques to identify and reframe disturbing thoughts makes all the difference.

Anxiety is a powerful monster - avoiding it makes things worse; it elicits a prey like response - as if being chased by a dangerous animal. Conversely, facing the challenges voluntarily elicits courage and perseverance. You may want to bring backup though! That's where I come in.

We will learn the fine art of defeating the monster together. But remember, they?re skills, meaning they take practice.

These skills will serve your mental health for years to come. They spell the difference between misery and fulfillment. They offer the power to preserve your goals and dreams and prevent negative forces from stealing your integrity.

I've helped countless individuals conquer their demons and unlock their potential. The same offer is being extended to you.

Moments of clarity and willingness are rare and fleeting. I implore you to act while the urge remains - it's impossible to predict when the next will come.

My practice has openings, however, they fill quickly. I don't overbook as I leave space to accommodate my current clients in times of need.

Contact me today and schedule a free 20 minute consultation, it's a great way to see if we're a good fit.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

Are you ready to conquer your demons?

I hope so. Because if you are, I'm ready and eager to help. Whether you feel exhausted by stress, an endless series of bad breaks and misunderstandings, or feel you made some big mistakes and can't turn things around, I'm here to help. Feeling crippled by anxiety, trauma, or substance use is no way to go through life. It feels hopeless when so many attempts to change have resulted in failure. Don't let the past dictate the future anymore. It's time to craft a new narrative. Lets work together and manage challenges so they stop managing you! Recovery is possible.

I see you as a unique puzzle requiring a unique approach.

One thing that's become clear to me is that different approaches work for different people. The one-size-fits-all strategy tends to fall flat on it's face. Cliches heard in therapy can feel condescending- the famous "and how does that feel?" nauseates me too! Being genuine is extremely important. After we zero in on the cause of your pain, we can start crafting solutions. I have a large repertoire of experience to draw on with proficiency in several modalities such as Motivational Interviewing, 12-step facilitation, cognitive skills, DBT, trauma informed counseling, existential therapy, and much more. We will find the tools that work for you. As a client of this practice, you are the number one priority.

Changing your narrative will change your life.

We use stories to help us make sense of our lives. Paying attention to what happens in the mind can revolutionize life. It's no secret that the way we think plays a huge part in how we feel, and how we live. Having self-defeating narratives can cause those thoughts to become reality. Consider how much potential gets blocked by thoughts like, "It's toohard," "I don't have the time," "I don't want to be judged," "If I ask this question, I might look stupid," What would get accomplished if we weren't bullying ourselves all the time?

My mission is to provide you with the best therapy available.

Waters Counseling provides a comfortable, casual, relaxed, and non-judgmental atmosphere. The office is furnished with a comfortable couch, desk, side-chair. Never mind how the media depicts therapy. It isn't that awkward in real life, I promise. You could expect sitting down and having a meaningful conversation about your challenges. The first objective is to get to know each other and explore the events leading up to the call for help. During the process, it will be important to share about your family, childhood, medical history, medications, history of therapy or treatment attempts - to name a few. We will look at when things started going down hill and wrap our minds around the issues to the best of our ability! Accurate diagnosis = effective solutions. In following this process, I will be able to understand you in the context of your life and challenges. Other aspects of the process may include homework assignments to learn about or use coping skills, taking healthy risks. Overall, the goal will to be to help you get where you need to be!

When you're here, you're a VIP.

When you're here, your well-being is the number-one priority. My goal is to constantly exceed expectations, ensuring everyone leaves with more than they came in with.

Priorities of the practice Include accommodating schedules, collaboration with family, friends and supports to help achieve the best possible outcome. You will feel supported, validated and cared for. Most importantly, you will no longer be alone.

Get ready for clarity, confidence, and fortitude?

Feeling confused and alone will become a distant memory as therapy progresses. A sense of efficacy and confidence in self will result. No longer compromised by the issues, a brighter and more meaningful future will become a reality.

Being down to earth, practical and optimistic tend to describe me best. Having an open mind along with humility and confidence are invaluable as a therapist. I tend to operate from the perspective that the client is most knowledgeable of their own life, usually a treasure trove of hints and clues to unravel during therapy. Therapy is more of a partnership than anything else. Sometimes the process can resemble a think tank, and at others like archeological dig, dusting away debris that uncovers hidden gems. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that growing pains were part of the process. I like to think of change in a similar way to a blacksmith shaping a piece of steel. Life can feel as though we're being placed in the "fires of challenge." However, in the end, realizing that the challenges make self-actualization possible.

I know this is a big step. I also know you can do it.

Please don't let fear or doubt hold you back from reaching out. It takes a ton of courage to just pick up the phone, or click the paper air plane button on the email.

If you can relate to the information and have a sincere desire to change, we'd make a great team. If your willing to talk about issues and not sure if it's time to go all-in, that's okay too - there's no commitment to change necessary, just willingness to have a conversation.
