My Approach to Helping

I'm a psychoanalytically oriented therapist with a special passion for working with artists and creative professionals. When our avocation becomes our vocation — that is, when we make the decision to leverage our art to furnish our lives — it arouses new fears, fantasies, pressures, and possibilities. It can be a lonely endeavor; asking for help along the way is an act of moral courage. I strive to provide for my clients a safe space in which to explore and express frustrations and longings, traumas and dreams, fears and desires. This is also the raw material of couples therapy — another passion of mine. When couples make the brave decision to seek help, they almost always present with the same complaint: communication has eroded. In my conception, communication isn't the problem; it's a symptom of the problem. Together we will help you understand the moment-to-moment emotional truth of your cycles of conflict so that you can begin to experiment with new ways of reaching one another.

More Info About My Practice

I also have experience with — and tremendous passion for — working with adolescents and with folks struggling with addiction and recovery. Addiction is a lens through which to think about all our mental suffering: we are all addicted to our defenses, whether those defenses be obsessional ruminating, compulsive shopping, insatiable hooking up, or substance abuse.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

As a psychoanalytically oriented therapist, I'm very open to seeing clients multiple times per week, if and when they decide it's right for them. Analysis and analytic therapy are about connecting your unconscious mind with your conscious mind, growing a fuller understanding of what motivates persistent choices and behaviors that may be costing you more now than they used to. With that greater awareness, and within the safety of the therapeutic relationship, in time you may begin to experiment with new choices, new modes of relating, that will ease your suffering.
