The city of Lawrence is located in Marion County, Indiana. It covers a land area of 20 square miles. Lawrence has a population of 49,000 people. There was a 6% increase in the number of residents from 2010 to 2016. 

The population of Lawrence is 57% white, 27% black, 11% Hispanic, and 1% Asian. Nearly 7% of city residents were born in a foreign country. Twelve percent of people living in Lawrence speak a foreign language at home. There are 5,000 Spanish speakers in the city.

Lawrence is home to over 3,400 veterans. Eighty-seven percent of residents age 25 and over have completed their high school education. Of this group, 32% have at least a bachelor’s degree.

People in Lawrence earn an average salary of $25,800 per year. The median household income is $48,700. The homeownership rate is 64%. In Lawrence, 17% of residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Lawrence

Substance use and abuse have increased among residents of Marion County. Between 2010 and 2018, the number of fatal overdoses almost quadrupled. Over 80% of drug overdoses involve some sort of opioid (most often fentanyl). There has also been an increase in the use of cocaine and methamphetamine.
