When patterns of the mind and behavior are brought to light and understood more fully and openly, they often cease to be repeated and alternative, healthier ways of being may emerge. The result is often a positive change in feelings and thoughts about the self, a resolution of symptoms or improvement in symptoms, an increase in security and fulfillment in relationships, and a more creative, meaningful and productive life. I offer a safe place for you to uncover and resolve that which may be stifling your growth and wellbeing. Some of the problems and concerns I have helped people with include: depression; low self-esteem; blocks in creativity and productivity; anxiety and fear; relationship problems; marital / couples problems; feelings of falling apart; worthlessness; hopelessness; identity struggles; results of sexual and other physical or emotional abuse in the past or present; mistrust; alienation; sexual or gender identity concerns; irresolvable anger; hearing voices; sleeping too much or not enough; difficulties at work.
People have a variety of reasons to hesitate starting therapy. They might feel like they don't have the time or money. Sometimes, people will spend money to foster their physical health (e.g. gym memberships, eating healthy foods) but neglect their emotional and relational health. But if we don’t attend to our emotional experience and relationships, we can get worn down, “burned-out”, or experience general discomfort in living. Therapy is an investment in your wellbeing and future. My rates are competitive with other psychologists. I accept most major health insurance plans and offer income-based fee reductions, in some cases, for those paying out of pocket. Another reason people hesitate to start therapy is because they doubt the effectiveness of therapy. Psychotherapy is evidence-based (see my website for details). Large effect-sizes have been found for cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches for a variety of problems. Patients who receive psychotherapy maintain therapy gains over time and continue their improvement after therapy ends. Long-term and short-term psychodynamic therapies have been demonstrated effective. You can think of psychotherapy as being like an effective medical intervention in terms of its effects on symptoms and mechanisms of action: psychotherapy can actually foster adaptive changes in the brain.
