I'm honored and excited that you are considering to invite me as a guest into your relationships and life situations! I believe that each individual has the knowledge and power to move through difficult circumstances in life, but sometimes you may find yourself caught in a difficult situation or worried about a particular concern that you feel you have struggled to navigate and may have even come to believe that you can't get through it. I will work with you or you and your partner/family to create solutions that you may not be able to see given your current life situation or relationships. With our combined experiences and knowledge, we will work together to manage issues that you are battling or that may come to pass in your future. Therapy is unique for each client (individual, couple or family). There is no clear description for what your unique therapy experience will be but I always work towards finding a process that is adjusted to your individuality and particular needs and interests. Through conversations, art, or movement/dance, I will work with you to discover solutions. I will assist in uncovering, rediscovering or creating with you those answers that I believe are hidden within you.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

As I read this today, I think the biggest piece of advice would be to not think so much about what it "means" to start therapy. Therapy is a conversation between two people (or more with couples/families) about things that are going on in life. Yes, it is different from a conversation with a friend over dinner and we can talk more about how in sessions, but the basic concept of it is that we are talking. Just like relationships with other people in your life, you can try it out, see how it goes and then begin to figure out if it is something that you like and/or is useful to you. Start thinking about what you want from therapy, try a session out and talk it over in the first session or two with me or whichever therapist you choose to try out first.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

I see therapy as a tool that exists in our society that can be used in various ways. I think that you as an individual must discover what tools work for you. With this belief, there is no room to think of therapy as something only for people who are "weak or flawed." A person does not only use the tool of exercise when they are out of shape, but rather those in shape continue to use exercise for maintenance. They may change what kind of exercise (ending therapy and finding other tools within your daily routine) but should they stop using tools entirely they will inevitably become out of shape again. Given this perspective, those who choose therapy in my mind are smart and strong to seek out and potentially find therapy as the tool that works for them. In order to counter the stigma that going to therapy means a person is weak or flawed, I explore with my clients their strengths and approach therapy with a focus on solutions rather than just the problem.
