About Marietta

Marietta is the administrative center of Cobb County, Georgia. It has a land area of 23 square miles and a population of 61,000 people. The number of city residents increased by 8% from 2010 to 2016. In 2006, Marietta was recognized as one of the top ten communities in the country by the National Civic League. Five years later, CNNMoney.com ranked Marietta as one of the top 25 places in the nation to retire.

Almost 20% of Marietta residents are foreign-born. The ethnic composition of the population is 46% white, 33% black, 17% Hispanic, and 3% Asian. Twenty-seven percent of people in the city speak a foreign language at home. Marietta is home to 10,300 Spanish speakers and 500 Portuguese speakers.

People in Marietta earn an average annual salary of $28,500. Eighty-five percent of residents who are over 25 years old have graduated from high school. Among this age group, 37% have earned at least a bachelor’s degree. Forty-two percent of families own their home. Roughly 20% of Marietta residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Marietta

In 2015, Marietta High School began providing “wrap-around services” for its 2,100 students. The Graduate Marietta Student Success Center offers two food pantries, a laundry area, tutoring, career guidance, and counseling. The school provides social-emotional therapeutic services for students with mental health concerns. Access to mental health care is relatively limited in the city. Over 27% of Marietta residents under the age of 65 do not have health insurance.  

School officials believe problems outside the school can affect students’ performance in the classroom. They hope by taking a holistic approach, they can prevent kids from “falling through the cracks.” Graduation rates at the school have gone up since 2015, suggesting the program does help students’ academic performance.
