The main approach I use in helping people is called narrative therapy. It is a respectful approach that views problems as separate from people (as opposed to problems residing within people), and it puts people in the driver's seat in developing a preferred "story" or way of living. During our conversations, I am curious about times when the problems have been smaller in your life, or even non-existent; I believe that problems never take 100% control in people's lives. I am also curious about what you put value to, your hopes, dreams and commitments. By thickening these preferred stories, the influence of the "problem stories" are reduced using the skills that people have within themselves! It's a beautiful way of working!
A strictly narrative approach is not helpful for everyone, and I also use cognitive behavioral therapy and reality therapy as tools to help you reach your goal. One size does not fit all!
