My Approach to Helping
Caryn is a Jungian-oriented counselor and soul therapist using the fairytale and mythological model of the Hero's Journey: At some point in your lives, you may find yourself facing a significant transition or major life decision. For many, the decision process is called the "dark night of the soul." Some call it spiritual madness. Still others may simply feel a sense of hopelessness, that something in their life is missing.
Joseph Campbell outlined the hero's journey in his book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, and Caryn has adapted Campbell's model to address the therapeutic and spiritual healing journey using a Jungian approach. Caryn suggests the therapeutic journey is similar to that of the hero's journey which is a three part journey: Part 1) Departure and Separation: A wake-up call appears through a nightmare, a relationship ends, or an illness manifests. The hero searches for the mentor, guide, soul therapist and crosses the first threshold. Part 2) Descent & Initiation: The hero makes the descent into the underworld, goes into the woods, or takes the sea journey and is swallowed by the whale. In Jungian language, this realm is called the unconscious where the hero must face and heal the original wounds, or complexes, through recovery of the lost treasure or soul-part and bringing it into consciousness. Part 3) Return: The hero begins the hard work of integration while living both in the top-side world and the underworld. Once the hero completes this initial journey, the hero knows it can be undertaken again and again as the call and the need arises.
Jung called this work the process of individuation. Caryn calls it the process of soul-making. It takes courage, commitment, and heart and for those who begin the journey, it is life-changing.
