My Approach to Helping

A strong therapeutic relationship is the starting point for positive change. With effort and time, you can explore emotions such as loneliness, shame, anger, fear, and sadness to understand how they affect your life. My practice is informed by attachment theory and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Greater awareness of your feelings and thoughts can help you make positive behavioral changes. A trusting therapeutic relationship offers space to grow while strengthening your sense of self and relationships. I look forward to working with you on this exciting, fulfilling journey!

I hope to help you use positive communication and coping skills. You already have these skills. My goal is to help them feel natural and comfortable. I am also a passionate sex educator and provide lectures and open forum discussions in a wide variety of contexts including chemical dependency, mood disorders, and relationship concerns and served as an adjunct faculty member at Augsburg University in the Social Work department from 2018-2021.

I hope to provide a safe space where you can freely discuss your feelings without judgment.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Sometimes it helps to compare therapy to a medical treatment. People are rarely considered weak or flawed for receiving treatment for cancer or other serious medical conditions. Therapy is a foundational support source, strengthening relationships that enhance well-being. I encourage you to keep an open mind about your sense of self as it relates to taking charge of your life through therapy.

What Makes up a Problem?

Problems have a lot to do with mindset. A "fixed mindset" might suggest that problems either are or they aren't, a black and white view with no middle ground and no real room for change. This can be problematic in therapy, where change is in constant bloom and needs nourishment and care. A growth mindset welcomes problems as an important part of life. Our problems shape our lives, and we gain meaning from joining together to address and resolve them. Interestingly our problems often contribute the most to our confidence and sense of self. For more on mindsets please see "Mindset" by Carol Dweck.
