My Approach to Helping
My therapeutic style is collaborative, empathetic, and person-centered. Clients I typically work with have presenting concerns such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. Depending on a client’s individual needs, I utilize a variety of modalities such as REBT, EMDR, narrative, and IFS. I find it helpful if clients explore their past traumas andor attachments. In many cases our adoption of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors acquired during our early years, which may have served us, hinder our ability to function optimally as adults.
In my view, the goal of psychotherapy is to loosen the bonds of past experience and insert spaces for reflection where they have not previously existed. It is through this process that we uncover opportunities to know ourselves more fully, connect with others more deeply, and live life more congruently.
How Psychotherapy Can Help
The psychotherapy process can be difficult to explain; but in general, I feel that therapy offers a unique opportunity for you to safely explore important areas of your life in greater detail, while you gain a new understanding of how both present and past experience has influenced your current emotions, thoughts and behaviors. With this understanding, you will begin to feel a greater sense of control in your ability to move forward and make important changes in your life.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
I believe (and the research indicates) that the therapeutic relationship is, at its core, the most important element in determining a successful outcome. I work collaboratively with my clients to address their concerns and I strive to do so with respect, dignity, and agency. In order to achieve desired results there must be a) a strong therapist client alliance, b) a mutual agreement about the purpose of therapy, and c) a mutual agreement about the methods used to achieve the purpose.
With every client, I recommend interviewing multiple therapists in order to determine the best fit. You will have to make the decision if I am the right fit for you. I am happy to provide you with referrals.
