The benefits of Telehealth counseling have opened up so many doors for people to seek help to improve areas in their life; convenience, more confidentiality and privacy, flexibility and it's more fun!

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

I would encourage you to consider the following points:
1. It's okay to ask for help: Seeking therapy doesn't mean you are weak or unfit. It takes strength and courage to recognize and acknowledge when you need help navigating life's challenges.

2. Therapy is a safe space: Therapists are trained professionals who provide a confidential and non-judgmental environment. They are there to listen, understand, and support you. This allows you to explore your thoughts, emotions, and concerns without fear of being judged or condemned.

3. It can provide a fresh perspective: Therapy provides an opportunity to gain better understanding and perspectives that you may not have considered before. Sometimes, discussing your concerns with an unbiased and trained professional can help you see things from a different angle and find new solutions.

4. You don't have to face it alone: Therapy provides you with a dedicated and supportive partner on your journey. Your therapist is trained to help you set goals, develop coping strategies, and work through problems. Having someone on your team can really make a difference in your journey.

5. It can lead to personal growth: Therapy is not just about managing problems; it can also encourage personal growth and self-discovery. It gives an opportunity to understand yourself better, develop healthy perspectives and coping mechanisms, and explore areas of personal development.

Remember, therapy is a personal choice, and fundamentally lies with you. It can be beneficial to examine your concerns, expectations and goals with a therapist during a consultation. This can help determine if therapy is for you and whether you are ready.
SO..Are you ready?

Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

First of all, I want to apologize on behalf to any of you who may have had a negative experience with a counselor or just the whole counseling experience in general. I am truly sorry that happened to you! However, that being said, please don't let that keep you from getting help that you need. I am sure you are familar with the saying, "don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch." Well it is somewhat similar to that! We are not all like that. I know how difficult that experience must have been for you. Don't continue to punish yourself by staying trapped in the cycle of anger, guilt and shame, and never getting any help because of the past. Counseling can be fun and is so worth it! Aren't you ready to start feeling better? I hope to hear from you!

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Choosing the right therapist is a crucial step in your healing and growth journey. Here are some important factors to consider when selecting a therapist:

1. Qualifications and expertise: Ensure that the therapist you choose is licensed and has the appropriate qualifications in their field. Look for things such as specialized training or experience in the areas you need support in, whether it's addiction, PTSD, trauma, or any other specific concerns.

2. Approach and therapeutic orientation: Different therapists may have different therapeutic approaches or orientations. Take the time to understand their approach and determine if it aligns with your needs. Some of the more well known approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based therapies, among others.

3. Trust and rapport: Building a strong therapeutic relationship is essential. Look for a therapist with whom you feel comfortable, understood and safe to explore your thoughts, feelings and vulnerabilities. Trust and rapport are crucial factors for a successful therapeutic relationship.

4. Specialized experience or personal knowledge: Depending on your specific needs and concerns, you might find it valuable to work with a therapist who has personal or professional experience in the areas you are struggling with. This can bring a deeper understanding and empathy to the therapeutic process and relationship.

5. Availability and logistics: Consider the practical aspects, such as the therapist's availability, location and session format (in-person, online or both). Find out about their scheduling flexibility and if it aligns with your availability and preferences.

6. Cultural or diversity considerations: It can be helpful to find a therapist who is sensitive to your cultural background, personal values or experiences. A therapist who is knowledgeable about or experienced in working with diverse populations can foster a deeper sense of understanding and cultural competence.

7. Referrals and testimonials: Seek recommendations from trusted sources, such as friends, family, or healthcare providers who have had positive experiences with therapists. Read reviews and testimonials to gain insight into others' experiences and the therapist's effectiveness.

Remember that therapy is a mutual process and finding the right therapist for you is an individual decision. It may take some time and trial and error but investing in the search for a therapist who meets your specific needs is essential for a successful therapeutic journey.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

THE INTAKEASSESSMENT:
The biopsychosocial intake, an assessment is generally 60-90 minutes and conducted at the beginning of therapy, assesses for biological, psychological and social factors that can be contributing to a problem or problems occurring for a client. The assessment takes into account the biological, social, and psychological aspects of someone?s life when determining what is negatively affecting their overall all daily functioning. The approach emphasizes the importance of a holistic view of the individual and an integration of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors on human development and functioning. It's considered a holistic assessment, looking at a client on all different levels. The biopsychosocial interview is utilized because problems usually don't exist in a vacuum--they all influence each other in different ways. It's not enough just to look at a person; you have to look at his or her environment as well.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY:
A therapeutic environment with the client and counselor focusing on treatment plan goals and objectives for a duration of 60 minutes. The primary goal of individual therapy is to increase understanding of one's thoughts and behavior patterns to help increase function and overall well-being. In therapy, an individual may learn how to handle stress, interpersonal difficulties and troubling situations in an effective and healthy manner.

FAMILY THERAPY:
Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy with all family members present, with the goal of improving communications between each other and their relationships. Every human being has some sort of healing to do. Improving your self-awareness and the way you view troubling situations are just two of the ways in which Family Therapy can dramatically change your life.

COUPLES THERAPY:
Couples therapy is a type of therapy in which both partners in a committed relationship are treated at the same time by the same therapist or therapists. Couples therapy attempts to improve romantic relationships and resolve interpersonal conflicts. This type of therapy is concerned with problems within and between the individuals that affect the relationship.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Sadly, this is one of the most incorrect and dangerous misunderstandings that our society has forced on us generation after generation; and because of this SO many people suffer silently with mental illness. Seeking therapy is the exact opposite of being weak or flawed, in fact it is a courageous and proactive step toward addressing your mental health and well-being. The decision to begin therapy is a sign of self-awareness and growth. By acknowledging that you may benefit from therapy shows a level of introspection and a desire for personal growth. It shows that you are willing to invest in yourself to improve your overall mental and emotional well-being.
Therapy is increasingly common and many individuals, even those without severe mental health issues, engage in therapy for personal development, stress management, relationship support, or self-exploration. Seeking therapy is a choice that numerous individuals make to enhance the quality of their lives. It's not easy to ask for help. Acknowledging that you may need support and reaching out requires tremendous strength and vulnerability. Therapy offers a confidential space where you can express yourself openly and honestly without fear of judgment. It provides a safe and impartial environment: a therapist is trained to provide empathy, understanding and support, creating an environment that encourages self-acceptance and growth.
Everyone can benefit from therapy. Therapy is not limited to individuals with severe mental health issues. It can be helpful for anyone who seeks support, guidance, personal development, or wants to improve their overall well-being. Therapy provides a range of tools, techniques and insights that can be valuable in various aspects of life.
Therapy promotes self-care and self-compassion. Just as we care for our physical health by attending the gym, addressing our psychological well-being is equally crucial. By prioritizing therapy, you are recognizing that your mental and emotional well-being is important.
Remember, therapy is a collaborative process where you and your therapist work together toward your goals. It is a strength to want to better yourself and a pathway to personal growth, healing, and self-discovery.
