My Approach to Helping
I am trained in and use Relational Psychoanalysis and Self Psychology along with some Somatic Experiencing training to help people overcome core issues and enjoy their lives more. When the emotions of life are too troubling or overwhelming and we don't have a way to deal with them we cope and protect ourselves by splitting off those emotions and memories out of our awareness in order to maintain stability and relative calmness. We maintain this split through the stuff that helps us avoid our feelings in this life (e.g. food, shopping, anger, sex, porn, restricting eating, binging, cutting, chronic relational stress, chronic anxiety, deadened emotions, depression, panic, etc.). This creates an unconscious self perpetuating cycle. This is potentially helpful and adaptive in the short term but a solution that over the long term requires lots of energy and is often costly to our happiness and relationships in the future. I aim to help provide space where fear can be decoupled from the sensations of the memories, this allows awareness of what’s underneath which is needed for processing. All of which is needed to bring rest to the pain so growth can occur.
