Registered Marriage & Family Therapist Intern - IMT1573
The main focus of counseling is to improve the quality of life of my clients. People come to us with their struggles – be it personal, marital, or family related. Their quality of life is low thus they are seeking help to rebuild. To help them we must work with the client(s) in defining the goals and the steps needed for their treatment. This is a process that is done as a collaboration between the counselor and the client(s). As goals are completed by the client(s) a reevaluation takes place. From here progress can be assessed and new goals created. New goals mean new action steps. Each client is unique which means that each situation and focus of therapy is unique. What worked with one client may not always work with another. This is why constant assessment and evaluation must happen on the part of the counselor. Assessments and evaluations will be gone over with the client(s) as often as needed.
The length of therapy is not predetermined unless a client has a set number of sessions authorized from their managed care (EAP’s). For the most part, the length of therapy depends on how much work you are willing to put into getting past the issues you have brought in to work past. For some people, the process is very quick and simple. For others it may be very drawn out. Clients are seen for therapy, usually, once a week. However, there are some clients that benefit greatly from twice per week or every two weeks. Some clients come as needed. It really depends on where you are in your work towards achieving the goal(s). Therapy is complete when the client feels it is complete. However, a therapist should work out with their client when it is time to terminate counseling. Most often it is a collaboration between the counselor and the client.
