My Approach to Helping
My therapy sessions begin by creating a space in which it is safe for clients to be themselves, to explore, to make mistakes, and to change. Sessions require of me a balance between nurturing and challenging clients, helping them to release fears and limitations, and encouraging their strengths and talents. From this process comes a dynamic, creative partnership in which clients begin to heal, lessen their own pain and grow. I want clients to take away from sessions the feeling that life doesn't always have to be a struggle, even though it is demanding and challenging. I take great joy and pride in giving this kind of experience to my clients.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I have had over 20 years experience working with couples and individuals with the core issues being the effects of having cheated on a partner or having a partner cheat on them. Affairs/infidelity can be extremely traumatic and couples frequently have no idea how to manage the upheaval caused by cheating. With guidance I have seen many people go through the process of healing and find that they have a better relationship post-affair than before the affair. I've made use of many methods for helping couples in the past but the most recent research by John Gottman on betrayal and regaining trust has had a profound effect my ability to help couples. My most recent cases have moved more quickly through the process and report a high level of recovery in the area of trust.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

The name of my practice is Mariposa Psychotherapy Services. Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly. After going into a cocoon, a caterpillar goes through a transformation called metamorphosis and emerges as a butterfly. The struggle the butterfly goes through during this process makes the butterfly strong enough to break the cocoon open and fly for the first time. I feel psychotherapy, mirrors this process. It's hard to see clients struggle with issues, but watching them transform into better versions of themselves is very fulfilling for me. I see my clients move on to have happier and more meaningful lives. I feel blessed to have been part of this process. Being part of this process has changed my life. My clients have taught me more than I could ever convey. Their courage and determination to be better has been a great gift to me. And I thank them for their willingness to share this process with me.
