What's My Approach to Therapy?

Life can feel overwhelming — especially when you're grieving, burning out, or navigating a change you didn't see coming. Whether you're coping with loss, managing a demanding career, or simply feeling emotionally drained, you deserve a space where you can slow down, take a breath, and find answers for yourself. I'm Ann, a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate practicing in Austin, TX at Luminary Counseling. My work is trauma-informed and person-centered, which means I believe you are the expert on your own life. My role is to walk alongside you, not ahead of you. Together, we'll explore your story, identify your strengths, and build the resilience you need for what's ahead. My path to counseling was shaped by my own life. A couple of years ago, things fell apart for me — I was burned out, grieving, and struggling with anxiety and trauma. I turned to counseling, and it changed my life. That experience gave me a deeper understanding of myself and showed me firsthand how transformative this work can be. It's why I left a long-term career in tech, consulting, and accounting to follow my heart into this field. I know what it's like to sit in that chair. I take our work together seriously. Asking for help is an act of courage and faith. Wherever you are, you are welcome in my practice. If you're ready to take a first step, I'd love to connect. I offer a free 30-minute consultation — no pressure, just a chance to meet and see if we're a good fit.

My Practice & Services

I offer therapy for adults, both in-person at my Austin office and via secure telehealth for clients throughout Texas. I'm a certified trauma professional and certified in telehealth delivery. My work is integrative, strength-based, and person-centered — always tailored to your unique needs and pace. I also bring a background as a bereavement counselor with Hospice Austin, which informs the depth and care I bring to grief and loss work specifically.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Choosing a therapist takes courage. It's not just okay to be selective -- it's important. Here's what I'd encourage you to consider: Connection comes first. Research backs this up: the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes. Does this person make you feel seen, heard, and respected? Trust that instinct. Look for relevant experience. A therapist who specializes in what you're navigating -- grief, anxiety, burnout, or life transitions -- will bring deeper tools to that work than a generalist might. Ask about their approach. Therapists work differently. Some are more structured; others follow your lead. Neither is wrong, but knowing which fits you matters. Don't overlook the practicalities. Fee, location, telehealth availability, and insurance all affect whether you can show up consistently. Consistency is where the real work happens. Use the consultation. Most therapists, myself included, offer a free initial meeting. Take it. It's low-stakes and gives you real information about whether this is the right fit. You deserve a therapist who genuinely fits -- not just one who's available.
