Each therapist and each kind of therapy is different. After all therapists are people and people are different. So if there are personality differences or major conflicts you will not feel comfortable and trust will not occur. This is what happens when most therapy relationships "don't work". So try another; anther therapist, another modality, another theoretical orientation. This way you can see problems from a different perspective and work on them in a different way. You may not have found the right fit yet. Don't give up, try again. A therapist should not be upset at discovering that the fit is not right or beneficial and should happily refer you to someone who is. I start therapy with 3 initial sessions to "try it out". Therapy occurs during this time and gives you and me the time to see if my approach is helping. The third session ends with discussing this fit, if the fit works then we set goals if not I refer you to someone that is a better fit. Example; I am not an older man and I do not use cognitive behavioral therapies as my main focus if this is what you need I need to help you find someone that meets this criteria and will eagerly do so. Do keep in mind a therapist is not a friend they are someone that points out the things you are having problems seeing so, if they are doing their job there will be times you don’t like them or what they are suggesting. If they always agree with you then that is not therapy.
I believe that therapy can be quick and short term and can also take months or years. This all depends on the problem(s) and what goals and expectations you would like to see. If the goals are to have your child decrease negative behavior in school and reduce impulse control this can be worked on in a shorter time frame. If your goal is integration of healthy coping skills to combat past childhood trauma that is causing active feelings of panic in your life then this is on the longer side. I believe that an active dialog between therapist and client needs to take place to determine the length of therapy. I provide regular "check in's" where progress is discussed, new goals developed and potential completion is discussed. Therapy ends when the client feels it is time, or when it is time to take a break. Also I as the therapist may suggest an end if I see that therapy is no longer helping.
