My Approach to Helping

I begin my work with a new client by listening and developing an understanding of what is causing or contributing to your current difficulties. I typically use one to three sessions to gather a developmental history and an understanding of your distress. At the end of this initial evaluation period, I will offer my impressions and suggestions for treatment. It is important for you to evaluate this information in light of your own understanding of your difficulties, goals for treatment, and level of comfort you feel during our sessions. This will inform our decision to proceed to work together and discussion of a treatment plan.

My work with clients draws from a wide range of therapeutic approaches. These include developmental, psychodynamic, interpersonal, family systems, and neurobehavioral approaches to treatment. If we determine that you need additional or other treatment services, I will provide referrals that will fit your needs.

Please call me at 650-427-9280 with any questions you may have regarding my services, rates, policies, and availability.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Learning Disabilities & ADHD: I am an expert in the evaluation and treatment of learning disabilities and ADHD. I regularly consult with child psychiatrists, pediatricians, and school personnel to coordinate care. I provide consultations and parent training for the emotional and behavioral issues associated with learning challenges, guidance on implementing school recommendations, as well as assistance on understanding the IEP process and 504 plans. I conduct school observations and attend off-site meetings, if needed. Learning challenges can create significant stress for family relationships. I help parents and families learn to navigate the difficulties and manage the strong emotions that go hand in hand with learning challenges. For children and adolescents, learning difficulties can wreak havoc on one's sense of self and feelings of worth. I help kids discover their inherent gifts and develop their strengths rather than focus on their perceived weaknesses.

Eating Disorders: I have significant training and experience working with both adults and adolescents with Eating Disorders. I utilize an outpatient approach that coordinates care with doctors, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, and psychiatrists. For adolescents, family therapy and parent education are a significant part of the treatment process. I collaborate with the Healthy Teen Project when a higher level of care is needed. I am also on staff as an on-call therapist with the Center For Discovery, a residential eating disorder treatment program located in Menlo Park.

Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

The key to effective mental health treatment is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client. Psychotherapy can bring up uncomfortable feelings at times, so it is important that you feel safe, understood, and supported. I will work with you to understand your challenges in a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental way. Let's engage in a process of meaningful change together.
