About Honolulu

Honolulu is the seat of Honolulu County and the capital city of Hawaii. It is situated on the southeastern shore of Oahu Island. The word “honolulu” means protected bay or sheltered harbor. Native Hawaiians founded Honolulu roughly 2,000 years ago.

Honolulu is home to 351,800 people. It is the largest city in the state. Roughly 23,500 military veterans live in the city. Eighty-seven percent of the people in Honolulu are American citizens (compared to the national average of 93%). 

The ethnic composition of the population is 54% Asian, 17% white, 7% Hispanic, and 6% Hawaiian. Thirty-seven percent of people in the city speak a language other than English at home. Over 8% of the population speaks one of the Pacific Island languages. Honolulu also has 23,500 Chinese speakers and 22,300 Japanese speakers.

People in Honolulu receive a mean annual wage of $32,600. Among residents over age 25, 88% have a high school degree and 36% have a bachelor’s degree. Twelve percent of Honolulu residents live in poverty.

Mental Health in Honolulu

In 2018, WalletHub ranked Honolulu as the 26th happiest city in America. However, access to mental health care is a concern in the city. Seven percent of residents under age 65 do not have medical insurance. 

In 2016, 61% of arrests in Honolulu involved residents experiencing substance abuse or mental health concerns. According to local officials, these individuals often wind up in the corrections system due to lack of treatment. For roughly a decade, the Honolulu Police Department has tried to keep people with mental health issues out of the criminal justice system. In 2015, the police diverted more than 3,200 people to treatment instead of jail.
