About Vernon

Vernon is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut. It covers a land area of 18 square miles and was incorporated in 1808. Vernon contains the former city of Rockville, as well as the villages of Talcottville and Dobsonville. 

Vernon has a population of 29,000 people. The town has roughly 1,870 veterans. Around 35% of residents age 25 or older have earned a bachelor’s degree.

Nine percent of residents were born outside of the United States. The population is 80% white, 8% Hispanic, 6% black, and 5% Asian. Thirteen percent of residents speak a language other than English at home. 

In Vernon, the median household income is $61,100. The homeownership rate is 54%, and the median property value is $206,000. Over 9%  of Vernon residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Vernon

Drug and alcohol use have been increasing in Tolland County over the past few years. This is true even among teenagers, who appear to have easy access to various drugs. In 2010, 89% of youths reported they could obtain marijuana from a peer, 79% could obtain alcohol, and 56% had access to prescription drugs. Heroin and prescription drugs appear to be the most popular substances used by teens in the area.
