If you are reading this, you are perhaps thinking about looking into counseling for an issue that is troubling you. Maybe there are multiple issues. Maybe you are thinking specifically about counseling with me. I hope you will give it a shot!
I am committed to seeing people move from emotional limitations into freedom, able to maximize potential and walk in their full destiny. You are not a victim. Be brave and address forgiveness, grief, self-esteem, or anxiety. It is important to deal with painful issues of the past. We will work creatively to address the distinct areas of your life that may be hurting.
One of the biggest challenges in our hectic world is finding peace of mind. Engaging calm in the often stormy sea of life is an important skill and is definitely an uphill swim against the stream of our culture. I call it a skill, because it can be learned.
An important part of my therapeutic practice is exploring identity - who are you and what does that look like? By knowing who you are uniquely created to be, you can develop your strengths and move forward confidently in life. Let's do this!

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed
You may have heard it said that "Information is power." Very often, people who have successfully engaged in counseling/therapy have gained priceless information about themselves and as a result are empowered to live life more fully. This empowerment informs who they are, what they do and how they do it. Insight gained is transferred into healthier relationships, better self-awareness, fuller embrace of family/social/career arenas. In short, therapy is anything but weak! You will be stronger for it. You will be further down the path of being the best "you" you can be.
Flawed? We are all flawed! It's what you do with your unique flaws that counts. No one gets out of this life perfectly intact. Like the Velveteen Rabbit, scarred and worn because he was deeply loved and selflessly returned that love, our flaws may be a result of simply playing the hand we've been dealt. Counseling may help you make the best of your imperfections. Indeed, your scars may be your finest features.
Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance
First and foremost, the therapeutic alliance is confidential. This legal and ethical component of the relationship allows a unique trust to be built. Rarely will there be grounds for this confidentiality to be broken. You will have to demonstrate to the counselor that you intend to hurt yourself or someone else. You and your therapist will sign an agreement stating that you both have this understanding.
Therapeutic techniques, modalities and methods are important. Clinical expertise is to be expected when you engage a counselor. State licensure boards are committed to ascertaining that all of the above as well as ethical standards are upheld. But the most significant aspect of your counseling experience is the relationship that you have with your therapist. The person sitting across from you in your sessions is committed to helping you through whatever issues you choose to present, maintain a calm and reflective presence and work with you to enable you to come to your own best conclusions. This relationship is non-judgmental and thus the alliance between client and therapist is one of care, empathy and equality.
