My Approach to Helping

Gestalt therapy is a time-proven and effective approach in psychotherapy. It is a humanistic, dialogical and experiential method of working with people of all ages. Gestalt therapy is founded on psychoanalysis, buddhist philosophy, phenomenology, holism, body work and psychodrama. It is the foundation of the more recently coined therapeutic approaches like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Systemic Family Therapy and Emotion Focussed Therapy (EFT).

You can expect to be interested and motivated. As the therapy progresses, art, music, dreamwork and body work may be part of the therapy sessions. These help sharpen awareness. My work centers around your therapy goals, and your search for answers to often difficult questions.

Can therapy help me? Does it work?
40 years of research have shown that psychotherapy works. When you come for therapy, for the first couple of sessions, the change feels natural and gradual. Some people do not realize that there is change. This is unlike taking medication. With the ongoing sessions, you'll perceive change in your body. Most people report being more at ease with themselves. Some people notice change in their relationships. With this change, most clients go back to work better able to cope with the underlying anxiety that hinders function. Unlike medication, psychotherapy allows the chemicals in your body to adjust itself. The change is better integrated. There are no chemical side-effects. The change is permanent.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

You are experiencing some kind of difficulty. It has been, perhaps, a while since you have felt like yourself. You really need someone to listen. Psychotherapy can help you find answers to difficult questions. You will learn through our sessions to get in touch with yourself, to be liberated, to be you and to thrive in the world.
Gestalt therapy, in particular, works by allowing you as a client to experience new ways of being. in the therapy session, you get to make contact with your anxiety, dissociations, and even culturally challenging issues in the safe space of the therapy session. You emerge with deep new learnings that is not only cognitively learnt, but also embodied.
I welcome anyone who would like to make this kind of experience.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

Gestalt Therapy is powerful. The therapy continues to work for you even after you leave the therapy room. For the first 3 months, I recommend weekly 45-50 minute sessions. It's quite like learning to ride a bike. In the beginning you need more support till you can manage on your own. Later on, you would want to choose to continue building new skills or maintain optimal function. This way, you get the best benefit from your therapy.
