My Approach to Helping

My name is Kasey Teasley. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I focus on the wellness approach which emphasizes the overall well-being and functioning of the client, going beyond just addressing symptoms to help clients achieve a higher quality of life. By identifying specific area in a client’s life that are hindering their daily functioning and collaboratively working on manageable tasks to improve these areas, I empower my clients to take active steps towards positive change. I have a comprehensive and integrated approach to counseling that draws from various evidence-based therapies. Integrating components of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, person-centered therapy, and motivational interviewing allows me to tailor my approach to meet the unique needs of every individual client. This eclecticism can be highly effective as it combines the strengths of different therapeutic techniques.

I have a diverse and valuable skills set in the field of mental health and substance use disorder treatment. I work with clients of all ages and specialize in areas such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, mood dysregulation disorders, conduct disorders and substance use disorders, indicating a broad and inclusive client focus. I believe in creating a warm and friendly counseling environment filled with unconditional positive regard which is incredibly important in the counseling process. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space for my clients where they can express themselves openly and honestly without fear of criticism. I will accept and support my clients regardless of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Years of experience in the substance abuse field gave me valuable insight into the complexities of co-occurring disorders and their impact on individuals struggling with substance abuse. Individuals with untreated mental health disorders may turn to substances to self-medicate, cope with emotional pain, or manage symptoms, leading to a cycle of dependency and addiction. To maximize my impact on people with substance use disorder, I decided to return to school to study mental health counseling. My dedication to continuous learning and professional growth enhances the quality of care and support that I can offer my clients.

My approach to goal setting is empowering and client-centered, focusing on collaboration and self-direction. By allowing to clients to identify the specific areas they want to work on, I acknowledge their autonomy and individuality. This person-centered approach fosters a sense of ownership and motivation, as clients are actively engaged in the process of setting and achieving their goals. The person-centered approach promotes a positive therapeutic relationship and enhance the client’s commitment to making meaningful changes in their life.

The key to successful counseling is the therapeutic relationship, empathy and the ability to create a safe and nonjudgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts, emotions and behaviors. The integrative approach, combined with emphasis on wellness and productivity, contributes to positive outcomes for my clients.
