My Approach to Helping
How do I fix my relationship issues?”
My training and experience as a marriage and family therapist allows me to help couples answer this question. Being in love is beautiful, but sometimes it's not enough to fix relationship problems. Sometimes you need help navigating relationship distress and finding your way back to each other. Other times, it’s suppressed emotions that are creating today’s conflicts. I find value in helping couples find direction in this process. I help couples identify barriers to intimacy and connection. My goal is to create a safe, accepting, caring, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel increasingly comfortable to express those unspoken emotions.
As a part of my work with couples focus is on understanding each person’s experience of the relationship, along with individual needs, expectations, and wants. I include individual sessions as part of the couples work so that I can learn more about the “you” before you were a part of the “couple”. It is important for me to understand your family of origin, past traumas and previous experiences because together they inform how you function in relationships.
Relationship challenges can cause you to feel stress, worry, and uncertainty. In my work with individual clients, I explore all types of relating to people to better understand the source of the anxiety or depression. I want to understand the source so that together we can tap into resilience, coping strategies, and tools. Your experiences are unique to you, your response makes sense in the context of your past. My goal with you will be to re-evaluate how you respond and make it align better with how you want to respond.
