My Approach to Helping
Therapy can be a wonderful way of finding meaning in one's life - as it is now - while still striving to make important changes. My work can be characterized as having a whole-person approach. Thus, I take into account emotional and physical issues, as well as one's culture, spiritual beliefs (whether strong or absent altogether), current life context, and personal goals for treatment. I believe a thoughtful, individualized, and collaborative approach tends to be the most therapeutic.

My areas of interest/expertise include using hypnotherapy, guided imagery, mindfulness, and biofeedback, as well as other psychotherapy adjuncts. I enjoy helping people with issues related to managing anxiety and depression, improving relationships, making healthy lifestyle changes, enhancing performance, and gaining greater insight into who they are and want to be.

In addition to the above, I have over 13 years of experience working with people who are medically ill and specialized training in management of chronic pain. Finally, as the former Director of Integrative Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, I have extensive knowledge of complementary/alternative medicine therapies and can discuss how these may or may not fit into your plan for healing.

My Role as a Therapist

I see my role as that of collaborator, educator, and facilitator of change. When someone comes in for a consultation, my aim is to learn more about why they are seeking treatment at this time, what they would like to be different, and how they will know when positive change has happened. Over the course of the therapy, I may point out the things I notice that either help or hinder them in achieving desired goals. So, this is how I see myself collaborating and facilitating. I try to operate from the point of view that the person coming in for treatment is the expert on his or her experience, and that I bring to the work my observations as an objective observer, as well as my clinical knowledge and experience. So, we are partners in this very important process, but our roles and the resources we draw upon are different. In addition, because I really, truly believe that health involves both body and mind, I often will ask what is going on physically, and may make referrals to other types of health care providers or conceptualize what is going on for the patient from a mind-body perspective, rather than a "purely psychological" one.
