My Approach to Helping
During my two decades as a therapist I have come to view therapy as a powerful process of self discovery and healing where numerous lessons can be learned, strengths developed, and deepest truths honored. Having witnessed again and again the innate pull toward change and growth which exists in each of us, I am an optimist who offers my clients deep respect, genuine warmth and caring and a pleasant, safe, and nurturing environment. My approach is strength based and I work collaboratively with clients, synthesizing various treatment techniques in order to best meet each person's unique and specific goals and needs. For more information you can call my office. You can also read excerpts from my book as well as some of my writings about psychotherapy by visiting my website.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I love being a therapist because each person that I meet is unique and presents new challenges and lessons. Each person who comes into my office counting on my extensive experience and training, also requires fresh eyes and a new perspective. I can think of no other profession that would challenge me to so fully engage my heart and head in such a perfect way.

My Role as a Therapist

I feel my primary role as a therapist is to serve as a loving and supportive guide and witness. While my years of training and experience provide me with a wealth of information I am able to share with my clients in the service of skill building, strength recognition, decision making, and problem solving; it’s in my role as a loving and supportive witness that I’m best able to facilitate my client’s growth and healing. On countless occasions during my years as a therapist I've sat speechless with a client, knowing all too well that there are no words that will comfort, justify, or explain the pain away. There have been so many moments when all my years of studying the human psyche and condition still render me helpless to alter my client’s particular circumstances or feelings. During these times, I am left with my deep compassion, my caring, my understanding, and my faith. While I'm always humbled during these periods, I'm not disempowered. I'm sustained by my belief that in joining another human being in her pain; in being a steady and present witness; in respecting the magnitude and depth of her feelings, while I may not be able to shield her from the darkness, I can stand faithfully beside her while we make our way out.
