Working With the ADHD Brain: Practical Tools for Overwhelm, Motivation, and Follow-Through

Presented by Corey Petersen, PhD, LCMFT on 07-17-2026 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Many clients with ADHD do not struggle because they lack insight—they struggle because the strategies they have been given do not actually work for how their brain functions. Executive dysfunction, emotional overwhelm, task avoidance, and inconsistent motivation can quietly derail progress in therapy, leaving both clients and clinicians feeling stuck.

This 2-hour continuing education training focuses on what clinicians can actually do in session to support clients with ADHD. Grounded in neurodivergent-affirming care, this workshop moves beyond theory and into practical, usable strategies. Participants will learn how to work with—rather than against—the ADHD brain by addressing overwhelm, reducing avoidance, and building motivation in ways that feel accessible and sustainable.

Through real-world techniques and clinical insight, this training equips clinicians to better support emotional regulation, create flexible structures for executive functioning, and shift patterns that often lead to frustration or shutdown. This fosters more effective sessions and a therapeutic approach that fosters both self-compassion and meaningful change.

This introductory level continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health practitioners:

  1. Develop practical, neurodivergent-affirming tools to address executive functioning challenges such as task initiation, planning, and time management.
  2. Recognize common cognitive distortions in clients with ADHD, and implement at least two strategies to support healthier thought patterns.
  3. Adapt mindfulness, motivation, and self-compassion practices to align with the ADHD brain style, fostering emotional resilience and reducing negative self-talk.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: The presenter of this training has no relevant financial or commercial conflicts of interest to disclose. This training is designed solely for educational purposes and does not promote any specific therapeutic product, service, or organization. This training presents clinical and scientific information on dyadic coping in couples facing illness, drawing from empirical research. The material is intended for mental health professionals seeking to enhance their work with couples navigating medical and emotional challenges. While research supports the effectiveness of dyadic coping interventions in improving relationship quality and emotional well-being, outcomes may vary based on individual circumstances. Therapists should exercise clinical judgment in applying these concepts, as misinterpretation or misapplication could lead to unintended relational strain or emotional distress for clients.

Statement of accuracy, utility, and most common risks: This training integrates current research on ADHD and neurodivergent-affirming care with practical, skills-based interventions. While the material is designed to be clinically useful and applicable, it is not a substitute for individualized assessment or clinical judgment. As with any intervention, there is a risk of oversimplifying complex presentations, overlooking comorbidities, or applying strategies in ways that do not align with a client’s unique needs. Clinicians are encouraged to adapt all tools thoughtfully and ethically.
