Using Early Recollections in Counseling Practice

Presented by Jon Sperry, PhD, LMHC, LCSW, NCC on 08-20-2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Jon Sperry will review the use of Early Recollections (ER’s) in counseling practice. Early Recollections are a useful projective assessment tool and therapeutic technique developed by Alfred Adler, the creator of Individual Psychology. The ER process can assist therapists and counselors to understand their client’s personality dynamics and to facilitate second-order change--transformational change. This strategy can be used by mental health practitioners working from a range of modalities from cognitive behavioral therapy to psychodynamic, existential, post-modern, feminist, and other therapeutic approaches.

This introductory level continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Define Early Recollections and the clinical process.
  2. Identify the several Early Recollection interpretation models.
  3. Summarize the empirical support of the Early Recollection process.
  4. Demonstrate the Early Recollection and interpretation process through experiential practice.
  5. Describe how to integrate Early Recollections in clinical practice.

Statement of program material’s accuracy, utility, and risks: The contents of this program are based primarily on research done over the past 30 years by which Adlerian counseling strategies have been used and validated among individuals, couples, families, groups, and students. The presenter will be sensitive of the potential clinical issue of implementing/false memory and will make sure to discuss safeguarding procedures that can be used when concerning memories are part of the therapeutic process. Course references will be provided to participants.

Declaration of conflicts of interest and commercial support: None.
