Residential treatment centers, often called rehab centers, are specifically designed to facilitate addiction recovery, treat behavioral issues, and support individuals living with mental health challenges. Residential treatment promotes healing by removing residents from the daily stresses of life while professional health care personnel provide residents with 24-hour therapeutic services. In addition to inpatient care, outpatient rehab services are often available at these mental health facilities.
Residential treatment centers come in various forms and are available to treat conditions such as posttraumatic stress, disordered eating, depression, and bipolar issues. People with depression, for example, may reside at a depression treatment center where they can obtain personalized care and further education about depression from mental health professionals and informally, through interactions with fellow residents who are experiencing similar symptoms.
Each residential treatment program is unique, offering a variety of programs, services, and activities. Some focus exclusively on substance abuse treatment, for example, while others are dedicated to nutrition and wellness. Most facilities will offer these basic services at a minimum:
The comprehensive 2014 mental health survey carried out by Mental Health America (MHA) indicates that 19% of Alaskan residents report being affected by a serious mental health condition, and more than 4% of adult residents have seriously contemplated suicide. The state received an overall MHA ranking of 31 out of 50 participating states, plus the District of Columbia, denoting a relatively high prevalence of mental health problems combined with limited access to health care.
In terms of overall well-being in 2013, Alaska ranked 16th out of 50 states by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, up from 31 in 2012. Interestingly, while the state is ranked 45th in terms of work environment in 2013, they are ranked in 1st place for emotional health.
Approximately 735,000 people resided in Alaska as of 2013, and males make up 52% of the population. Roughly 26% of the population is under 18 years of age and 9% are 65 or older. Whites make up more than 67% of the population, and American Indian or Alaska Natives make up nearly 15%. Seven percent of residents identify as two or more races. The median household income is more than $70,000, and just 10% of the Alaskan population lives below the poverty line, compared to 15% nationwide.
