Mental Health in McLean

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) has provided walk-in mental health services for Fairfax county residents since November 2016. Over 600 youth have asked for health screenings and assessments.

In the two weeks following the Parkland shooting, over three dozen families and teens in Fairfax asked the CSB for mental health support. Before the incident, an average of 12 youths sought services each week. The increase suggests traumatic events may have widespread effects even among people who were not directly involved.

Health officials believe traumatic events may trigger symptoms among youths who are at risk for anxiety or depression. To counteract these effects, the Fairfax County Public School has sent parents information on how to discuss tragedies with children and warning signs to watch for.
