Welcome! My name is Amy Volweider, LCSW, and I am on a mission to bring out the best in the people around me. My specialties include treating anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress reduction. I utilize the latest in evidence-based treatment that is uniquely tailored to each individual, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness techniques. I especially enjoy working with creatives, perfectionists, and those who struggle with self-compassion. I genuinely believe most people are doing the best they can with what they’ve got but sometimes need a little push to get to where they need to go. I’m here to give you that extra push. As our lives continue to unfold during these challenging times, I’m available to provide you with a collaborative and judgment-free zone that sets aside the time and space you need to be able to heal and grow. I’m a warm, spirited, and patient-therapist whose goal is to enable people to find more balance and joy in their lives. My approach to setting goals with clients is to collaborate and develop an individualized plan that includes ways to measure progress while staying flexible enough to pivot and update goals depending on the needs of each person and their circumstances. Clients should expect a casual and judgment-free space to begin sharing their stories with me. I'll lead with some general questions to gather background information and provide some loose structure until the client, and I find a pace that feels the most comfortable.

I like to describe my therapeutic style as eclectic. I pull from many different modalities to find what works best for each individual client. I believe that nothing in life is one size fits all and therapy is no different. Each individual needs something different when they engage in therapy and I strive to help my clients based on their individual needs. I like to take time to get to know my patients at to work collaboratively with them to create goals that make sense for their lives and needs. I primarily work with adolescents, teens, and young adults. I love working with these age groups because there is so much change happening during this time in someone's life. I am a fairly casual person and (when appropriate) like to use humor to connect and engage. I also am a bit of a nerd and have at least a basic to moderate understanding of many of the things that the younger generations enjoy (video games, TikTok, memes, movies, tv, etc.). I love to use this to connect with my clients and to allow them to feel seen.

Do you ever feel like there's an instruction book to life that everyone got but you? Does it seem like everyone else "has it all together" and you're just trying to fake your way through life? Not a good feeling, is it? Believe it or not, you're not alone, and you're not as bad as you think. You've learned ways to think and feel about yourself that made sense in the past, but they aren't working so well now. I specialize in helping my clients identify their unhelpful ways of thinking and feeling so they can choose to think and feel differently about themselves and improve their self-esteem. I also help clients to process traumatic experiences, both "big T" traumas (like combat, sexual and physical assaults, and car accidents), and "little T" traumas (like negative interactions that lead to a poor self-image). Contact me today so I can help you to understand why you shouldn't believe everything you think!
I work collaboratively with my clients to help them learn new coping skills, create positive changes, and attain the goals they have for themselves. My clients view me as supportive, nonjudgmental, and practical. I work with professionals, including MDs and attorneys, as well as stay-at-home moms and students. I specialize in helping people manage anxiety and stress, perfectionism, self-esteem issues, codependency and relationship concerns, and depression. I also support clients who are navigating in vitro fertilization (IVF) and a challenging fertility journey. I help my clients create a more balanced, meaningful, and fun life for themselves. This can include managing negative self-talk, learning to be more assertive and set boundaries, and re-evaluating self-care.
Typically I work with clients who have unresolved trauma and is still stuck in problematic behavioral patterns. They have often done some "talk therapy" in the past but didn’t really find it that helpful. I use more experiential methods to help you make lasting changes that improve your quality of life, not just provide stabilization. I’ve found that talk therapy can be one of the slowest ways to do therapy, and that if you ignore sensory input from the body, then you’re only doing therapy from the neck up. Whether you’re facing new challenges or struggling with ongoing circumstances, you may be feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, helpless, or anxious. You may also have slipped back into unhealthy patterns of behavior that you worked hard to change. I take a collaborative approach to therapy, and I’ll tell you up front that I don’t have a crystal ball or magic wand! I believe that we each have a unique journey, and while I do have education and training as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Maryland, I haven’t lived your life, and I’m not an expert on YOU.
I am an empathetic and experienced therapist with a passion for empowering my patients through an individualized approach to wellness. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from North Carolina Central University and a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, D.C. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Maryland. Since graduating with my master’s in 2018, I have worked with adolescents and adults from many cultural backgrounds who have experienced homelessness, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other life stressors. I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and I also draw from a range of other approaches because I believe therapy is most effective when it’s personalized for each person.

You can learn much more about my style of care by reading the articles on our website blog - I have been writing those for 5+ years.
I help individuals with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationships challenges, childhood trauma, stress, and families navigating behavioral issues. I teach my clients communication skills that improve their relationships. Those skills boost my clients' power and voice, as well as their intimacy with their significant others. I rely on a number of approaches, including Gestalt, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, somatic experiencing, and experiential dynamic psychotherapy. I help clients dealing with traumatic stress reduce panic, pain, numbness and hyper-arousal in response to life and relationships difficulties. I combine calming and relationship skills to help children, adolescents, and young adults reduce family discord and ADHD, and increase self-efficacy. I help my clients navigate their behaviors, emotions, cognition, and physiology. I help couples and individuals explore the ways that small changes in attitudes and stances can nurture new ways of feeling, thinking, and being in the world.
