What's My Approach to Therapy?
In graduate school, Dr. Rand was elected to membership in The Texas Woman's University's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. To earn this distinction, faculty members must make the recommendation. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. It is a community of scholars and professionals building an enduring legacy of scholarship excellence for future generations.
Dr. Rand has always been an active member of her community and an advocate of positive social change. In Texas, where her career as a psychologist began, she conducted her dissertation research on domestic violence. She then served as a member of the Executive Board of the Lillian Smith Family Violence Foundation, dedicated to changing public attitudes and policies which condone violent behavior.
During recent years, she began working with elder family members residing in their own home or in senior living communities, first in Texas and then in Arizona. In Spring of 2009, she transferred to Arizona for an opportunity to serve as the consulting psychologist at a long-term care facility for seniors in Phoenix. She counseled with persons typically over the age of 50 with rehabilitative concerns, special issues related to aging, andor dementia-related problems using a person-centered approach to assessment and therapy.
In the last several years, Dr. Rand began to realize that the practice of psychology was insufficient to meet many of the needs that face our communities in an increasingly political, violent, and unforgiving world. Recidivism rates for problems such as domestic violence, child sexual abuse, and family estrangement have only increased. What is more, the practice of psychology alone has been insufficient in dealing with the evils of the world. This is true because these are community issues and must be addressed at the local community and societal levels. So many people have very little understanding and no insight regarding the evils of the world, such as school mass shootings, human trafficking, use of pornography, and the proliferation of dangerous drugs deliberately produced to harm and kill our children. With these realizations, Dr. Rand sought training in Biblical counseling to provide a higher-order level of understanding for these problems. In 2022, she added this additional component to her practice for those clients who seek it.
