After over 15 years in private practice, I have come to believe that healing is less about the “right” technique and more about feeling genuinely seen, and safe enough to discover yourself. Authentic connection is at the heart of my work. Much of my practice is with people who have experienced trauma, or who find themselves caught in patterns they haven't been able to change. Sometimes we come to therapy because life is overwhelming, or we know something needs to change - but aren't quite sure how to get there. Often the things that helped us survive earlier in life are the very things that are getting in our way now. I believe you are the expert on your own experience, and that the wisdom and capacity for healing are already within you. My role is to create a grounded, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can slow down, become more deeply connected to yourself, and discover what is asking to be seen, held and or changed. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and my work is informed by Somatic Experiencing, Gestalt therapy, EMDR, Brainspotting and Family Constellations. I work experientially - at a pace that respects your nervous system, rather than asking you to override (again) what has happened to you. Sessions are intentionally longer than a typical therapy hour, allowing enough time to move beyond simply talking about what is happening and into actually experiencing something different. I also offer psychedelic preparation and integration for people who are approaching these experiences thoughtfully and with intention. My personal experience with Ayahuasca, Kambo, Bufo5-MeO-DMT, and MDMA has given me a deep respect for the power—and the responsibility—of this work. I believe therapists need to continually do their own work. We cannot reasonably invite another person into places we are unwilling to explore ourselves. I have spent many years doing that work, and I know how difficult it can be to sit in the other chair. I also know how profoundly life can change when we are willing to do it. If you are ready for something to change—not just to manage things a little better, but to genuinely explore what is underneath them—I would be honored to work with you
My ideal client wants to get the most out of their life by incorporating improved psychological and spiritual practices. My deeply empathic approach is supported by advanced training. My 20-plus years of post-graduate experience allow clients to receive effective, personal treatment. I have successfully treated many people who have struggled with depression, anxiety, addiction, and grief and loss. I always try to honor the brave decision it takes to seek professional help, and I take that commitment seriously. My extensive training and experience in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy allow for the professional fluency and personal warmth needed to support people through depression, anxiety, addiction, and grief and loss. For years, I have helped adults and adolescents reach personal goals that once felt out of reach. Come in for a free face-to-face consultation, and I will discuss treatment options that I provide, as well as options other professionals provide. You have everything to gain by reaching out for help, and I look forward to working with you. You don't have to walk your road alone.
I am a licensed psychotherapist in private practice with nearly 20 years of clinical experience providing therapy for adults and couples throughout New York State. I work with individuals who often appear highly capable and successful on the outside, yet privately struggle with anxiety and mood difficulties, emotional overwhelm, trauma, relationship difficulties, burnout, chronic stress, or a persistent sense of feeling stuck, despite insight and previous therapy. Many of the people I work with are accustomed to functioning at a high level in their personal or professional lives. They may understand their patterns intellectually, yet continue to experience the same emotional reactions, relationship dynamics, or internal struggles that seem resistant to change. Therapy can become most valuable when understanding alone is no longer enough. My approach is integrative, trauma-informed, and grounded in current neuroscience, recognizing that emotional difficulties are often held not only in thoughts, but also in the nervous system, relationships, and lived experience. Rather than applying a single method to every person, treatment is individualized and may draw from psychodynamic therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic approaches, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and nervous system regulation strategies. I believe meaningful therapy extends beyond symptom reduction. While many people seek relief from anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, or relationship conflict, my goal is to help create deeper and more enduring change, greater self-understanding, improved relationships, increased emotional resilience, and a stronger connection to yourself. I also work with couples seeking relationship therapy around communication difficulties, recurring conflict, betrayal and trust concerns, life transitions, and relational patterns that create distance or disconnection. I offer online therapy throughout New York State and provide both short-term focused work and longer-term psychotherapy, depending on your needs. Beginning therapy can feel vulnerable, but it can also be the start of meaningful and lasting change.
I believe therapy is a way toward a fuller, more satisfying life. Together we will journey past the obstacles to greater self-esteem, more satisfying relationships, work and play. I engage actively with you but am guided by your individual needs and wishes. I believe therapy can help you to find ways to expand the strengths you already have and add new skills, experiences and ways of seeing yourself. I work in an eclectic manner and am particularly interested in the unity of body and mind. How we think and feel are intimately connected and I am interested in bringing together the various dichotomies that confound us: thoughts and feelings, past and future, work and creativity, self and other.
The relationship between psychotherapist and client is of utmost importance in my practice- feeling understood, accepted and not judged. With my extensive experience in the field both as a practitioner and a teacher, having a foundation of knowledge of human psychological development and unconscious processes is requisite to being able to listen to and understand what people are expressing, both within their awareness and what may not be accessible to them without professional help. I work with each person based on what their individual needs are.

Over the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of working with individuals from all walks of life. My approach is grounded in a deep respect for the individual human spirit and a true belief in the therapeutic relationship as a means to create a sense of possibility in life and a desire to move forward. We all have the answers to those challenging questions within us. My hope is to facilitate this process of recovery.
I am a psychoanalyst, graduate of the Training and Research Institute of Self Psychology, an EMDR practitioner, and a sandplay therapist trained through the Sandplay Therapists of America, which has a Jungian foundation. My experience with children and families as a consultant for high schools, elementary schools, preschools and clinics has shaped my ability to work intuitively and spontaneously in a wide variety of circumstances. My experience as a professional artist and my meditation practice also greatly inform my work. My partner, William Murray, PhD, and I have formed Keene Murray Therapy and have an office across from Prospect Park in Brooklyn. We also work long distance on the phone and Skype. Besides our individual work, we offer workshops, CDs and dual-therapist couples therapy. Our work at Keene Murray Therapy is: Creative shaped both by an immersion in a variety of psychological approaches and an extensive background in creative arts. Respectful We recognize that our clients are the only ones who can truly tell their story. Our function is to help clients identify and achieve their goals. Non-pathologizing We believe that most problems are simply former solutions that no longer work. We help clients discover more adaptive means to meet life's challenges. Collaborative We value the interpersonal quality of a therapeutic relationship that acknowledges the effects and influences that both client and therapist contribute. Depth-oriented Experience has shown us that significant change has its roots in the multi-layered interconnectedness of a person's inner life. We accompany clients as they explore and learn to navigate this strange and exciting territory.
Fall has a way of sneaking up on you, suddenly the holidays are coming, the days feel heavier, and if you're already struggling, that weight can get overwhelming fast. I help adults who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally stuck find more stability and clarity, including those navigating trauma, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or psychosis. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported. I tailor our work to meet you exactly where you are (not a one-size-fits-all plan) using evidence-based methods, creative tools, or both. Together, we'll get you to 'I got this! I draw from a few modalities including Accelerated Resolution Therapy, which helps reframe distressing memories to eliminate triggers, and art therapy, which can give shape and color to feelings that words can’t always capture. Sessions are often a mix of conversation, reflection, and even laughter as we build trust and move. If you’re ready to take the next step, I’d be honored to walk alongside you. I invite you to book a session so we can begin creating a plan that feels right for you. My hope is that by the end of our first meeting you’ll feel lighter, more hopeful, and maybe even surprised at how much you’re looking forward to our next session because I know I will be.
