My approach in therapy is collaborative, supportive, and goal oriented.
It’s not always easy to create a life that feels aligned with who you are. You might find yourself feeling disconnected, uncertain, or questioning your choices, wondering why things don’t feel as fulfilling as you expected. These experiences can be difficult, but they can also be important starting points for deeper understanding. Therapy offers a space to slow down and explore these questions with care. Together, we’ll look at patterns in your emotional life and relationships, explore how past experiences may be shaping the present, and reconnect with what feels most meaningful to you. My approach is thoughtful, collaborative, and insight-oriented. Sessions are reflective and focused on helping you better understand yourself over time, with space to process emotions and gain clarity. I often work with individuals navigating life transitions, relationship concerns, and a general sense of feeling unfulfilled or “off.” Over time, clients often feel more connected to themselves, more clear about what matters, and more able to move forward with intention. If you’re considering therapy, you’re welcome to reach out for a free consultation to see if this feels like a good fit.
Beginning therapy often brings a mix of hope and uncertainty, especially if you’ve been holding a lot on your own. I strive to create a space that feels grounded, collaborative, and attuned to your pace, where your nervous system and personal history are respected. You don’t need to arrive with a clear agenda—our work unfolds through curiosity and shared understanding. My work is rooted in trauma-informed, experiential therapy that looks beyond symptom relief to the emotional patterns and meanings beneath them. Together, we explore responses that may have once been adaptive or protective, with the goal of gently updating what no longer fits your present life. I approach this process with care, compassion, and deep respect for each person’s resilience. At its core, therapy with me is about creating room for authenticity and growth. Rather than pushing for change, we focus on helping you feel seen and supported in a way that allows change to emerge naturally. My hope is that this work leads to greater emotional freedom, clarity, and a stronger sense of connection—to yourself, and to the relationships that matter most.
I am a psychoanalyst, graduate of the Training and Research Institute of Self Psychology, an EMDR practitioner, and a sandplay therapist trained through the Sandplay Therapists of America, which has a Jungian foundation. My experience with children and families as a consultant for high schools, elementary schools, preschools and clinics has shaped my ability to work intuitively and spontaneously in a wide variety of circumstances. My experience as a professional artist and my meditation practice also greatly inform my work. My partner, William Murray, PhD, and I have formed Keene Murray Therapy and have an office across from Prospect Park in Brooklyn. We also work long distance on the phone and Skype. Besides our individual work, we offer workshops, CDs and dual-therapist couples therapy. Our work at Keene Murray Therapy is: Creative shaped both by an immersion in a variety of psychological approaches and an extensive background in creative arts. Respectful We recognize that our clients are the only ones who can truly tell their story. Our function is to help clients identify and achieve their goals. Non-pathologizing We believe that most problems are simply former solutions that no longer work. We help clients discover more adaptive means to meet life's challenges. Collaborative We value the interpersonal quality of a therapeutic relationship that acknowledges the effects and influences that both client and therapist contribute. Depth-oriented Experience has shown us that significant change has its roots in the multi-layered interconnectedness of a person's inner life. We accompany clients as they explore and learn to navigate this strange and exciting territory.
Frequently, people who have experienced trauma, develop extraordinary survival skills. Often the strategies that were critical for survival when you were a child, thwart the ability to develop satisfying work, family or romantic relationships in adulthood. Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to transcend patterns that are holding you back from achieving your goals, and realizing your potential. This often includes addressing family, career, and relationship issues within the treatment as well as recognizing thinking or behavior which may be harmful or holding you back. I specialize in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety and depression, and am certified in EMDR, CPT and MI. Additionally I am trained in Internal Family Systems. My practice is influenced by CBT, psychodynamic, Schema and mindfulness-based therapies. We will spend our first sessions exploring important historical information, assessing your needs, and setting goals. I strive to nurture relationships with clients that are compassionate, kind, and non-judgmental, and safe enough to tolerate direct but gentle confrontation. Together we will determine the approach and pace that will work best for you.
Please note that I am currently only offering therapy via a HIPAA compliant Telehealth service that offers excellent video and audio, allowing you to engage in therapy from the comfort and convenience of your own home. I view therapy as a collaborative experience aimed at helping patients become the best version of themselves. I love working with patients who are motivated to make change and excited to learn more about who they are and how they navigate the world. I have a plethora of experience working with individuals and couples who have mood disorders, anxiety related disorders, complex physical and sexual abuse traumas, and those who have difficulty adjusting to life changes. I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is an active, structured, and goal oriented form of therapy that aims to uncover and change maladaptive patterns of thoughts and behaviors. Additionally, I practice EFT for couples and EMDR, CPT, PET, and WET for those with symptoms of PTSD. I'm glad to provide you more details on all modalities. Whether you're returning or going for the first time, therapy can be scary. I pride myself on creating a warm, accepting, and empathetic environment that aids patients in opening up and exploring themselves. I am direct with patients and encourage them to face things that make them uncomfortable so they're able to grow. I specialize in working with young adults struggling with anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions and substance use. When we are anxious and overwhelmed, it can cause us to feel disconnected from others. Feeling stuck and stressed can trigger self-doubt and poor decision-making, and this chips away at our self-esteem. Personal challenges have taught me that tough times can be an opportunity to gain wisdom and resiliency. I can help you identify the core issues that are negatively impacting your life and deterring you from enjoying your life and achieving your goals. I am an ‘active’ therapist, who makes suggestions and offers guidance, as opposed to just asking “how does that make you feel”? I forge close relationships with clients, who appreciate my warmth, openness and good energy. I provide clients a safe, judgement-free space, where they feel heard, respected and supported. Using holistic and science-based methods, I teach clients solution-focused strategies that they implement in their daily life and for future bumps in the road. With my help, clients learn to step into their personal power. This increases their self-confidence, optimism, and self-awareness. If you are ready to step into your power, I can help you get there.
Offering therapy that is insight oriented as a first step to healing. A structure of non-judgement, consistency and a strong client-therapist relationship are important pieces. This relationship is used as a tool to help make sense of and improve various emotions, thoughts, behaviors and patterns that may have become disruptive or problematic. Through guided exploration, the goal is to understand their influence on the way in which we experience ourself in the world.
It’s never been more important to learn how to self-regulate: to settle yourself down when you’re freaked out, to get yourself engaged when you’ve frozen. To cultivate your sense of coherence and capacity. I can help you do that in our sessions, and teach you how to get there yourself, when you’re facing these challenges on your own. And as so much of healing comes from relationships, both personal and in a professional healing ones, it is essential to build these connections. When we’re stuck in a threat response, it’s hard to reach out and feel others’ support. There are many challenges we are currently facing, and we don’t have to do it alone. Getting your system regulated and calm can help you better access the support that is here. Incorporating the body into the conversation of healing is an essential part of developing vitality and joy. The focus of my practice is to work directly with the physiology and with energetic systems, building health and slowly renegotiating how life challenges were managed. The modalities I use to guide this work are Somatic Experiencing, Polarity Therapy, Inner Relationship Focusing, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, AEDP, Reiki and Realization Process, supported by psychotherapy.
I practice a problem focused, short-term, and distinct form of cognitive behavioral therapy. I am an active directive therapist. I teach people how to change what can be changed and to accept what cannot be changed about themselves, others and life. I teach rational thinking. This approach is called Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). It was created by Albert Ellis a famous psychologist who I worked with for many years. This is a no nonsense approach to emotional and behavioral health. I actively show you how not to upset yourself when you encounter difficulties so that you can then go about attempting to modify what can be changed. I teach people how to control their emotions and behaviors. I work with individuals and couples. I show people how to adopt sensible beliefs so that they can achieve their potential. Please go to my website and watch my video and read more about this very pragmatic, fast acting and direct form of psychotherapy.
I specialize in providing traditional psychotherapy with an integrative, holistic approach. Our work begins with assessing not only emotional and psychological health, but also physical, spiritual and sexual wellness. I believe the mind and body are inexorably entwined, with each affecting the functioning of the other. I strive to provide a warm, supportive space in which we can create a plan to improve whole-person wellness and self-care.
While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. If you're looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation, or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals. With over 15 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families, I specialize in person-centered therapy, which enables me to create individualized treatment for each client I meet. Psychological evaluations are also offered to assess for attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), learning challenges, autism spectrum, and developmental delays. At our practice, we use humanistic therapy techniques. I employ a range of techniques, including play therapy, sandplay therapy, expressive therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, neurofeedback, biofeedback, and person-centered therapy. I believe that every individual or family is unique, and the treatment should be catered to their needs.
