Theory and Practice of Solution-Focused Counseling

Theory and Practice of Solution-Focused Counseling

Presented by Jeffrey Guterman, PhD on 02-09-2018 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Solution-focused counseling is a comprehensive model that emphasizes clients' resources, strengths, and effective coping skills to bring about positive change. If these resources—called exceptions—are identified and amplified, then problem resolution can be brought about in an effective and efficient manner. Solution-focused counseling holds that clinical realities are co-created in therapeutic conversations. Accordingly, defining problems and goals in solution-focused counseling is a collaborative process.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Jeffrey Guterman provides an opportunity to learn the theory and practice of solution-focused counseling. Dr. Guterman will review the main principles of the model and describe the theory of problems and change in solution-focused counseling. Attendees will learn the stages of the model, including:

  • Defining solvable problems and setting attainable goals.
  • Identifying and amplifying exceptions.
  • Setting relevant tasks.
  • Preparing for termination.

In addition, Dr. Guterman will provide an overview of solution-focused techniques that use exception questions, scaling, and structured tasks as well as their clinical applications. He will also describe a variety of clinical applications for solution-focused counseling.

Solution-focused counseling follows a strategic approach to eclecticism that allows for the compatible and effective application of theories and techniques from other therapeutic approaches. Dr. Guterman will provide insight into this modality that emphasizes how the diverse worldviews and experiences of individuals in therapy inform, influence, and impact problems, goals, and the treatment process. From this unique perspective, both the individual and the clinician teach and learn from one another and, thereby, co-create cultures of therapy.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Summarize the main principles of solution-focused counseling.
  2. Explain the theory of problems and change of solution-focused counseling.
  3. Discuss the clinical stages of solution-focused counseling.
  4. Demonstrate solution-focused counseling techniques.
  5. Recognize clinical applications of solution-focused counseling.
