Participants will learn to recognize common signs of emotional distress, understand key risk and protective factors, and respond with empathy, presence, and clarity. The session explores the emotional impact of suicide on individuals and relationships, offers guidance for navigating challenging conversations, and emphasizes how to remain present with someone experiencing intense emotions without needing to have immediate solutions. Participants will leave with increased confidence and practical tools to support others in a thoughtful, compassionate, and effective manner.
This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:
Statement of accuracy, utility, and most common risks: This program presents research-informed clinical content related to suicide risk, prevention, and postvention, grounded in established mental health best practices. The training is designed for mental health professionals seeking to enhance their ability to identify suicide risk, engage in supportive and ethically appropriate conversations, and facilitate connections to appropriate mental health and community resources. No prior specialized training in suicide prevention is required. The program addresses the application of course concepts within professional scope of practice and emphasizes clinically responsible, culturally responsive, and ethical use of the strategies presented. While the research reviewed supports the effectiveness of these approaches when appropriately applied, the presenter acknowledges that not all strategies are suitable for every client, population, or practice setting, and that misapplication may result in unintended outcomes.
Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: No conflict of interest indicated.
