Is It Anger or Abuse: How to Tell the Difference

Presented by Alyce LaViolette, MS, MFT on 05-06-2022 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

This 2-hour continuing education webinar for mental health professionals will look at a range of behaviors that can be descriptive of anger or abuse and differentiate between the two.

Alyce LaViolette, MS, MFT will focus on aggression that can occur in otherwise healthy families, aggression that can occur during loss and separation, and different typologies of abusive individuals. She will focus on factors that can exacerbate or mediate potentially abusive or abusive behavior as well as interventions clinicians can use with individuals perpetrating interpersonal violence. Ms. LaViolette will review her Continuum of Aggression and Abuse resource as well as peer-reviewed descriptors and tools.

This introductory web conference is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. List the key differences between anger and abuse.
  2. Describe factors that can mediate aggressive behavior.
  3. Explain factors that can exacerbate aggressive behavior.
  4. List at least three factors that affect vicarious trauma and fear.
  5. Describe differences between patterned and situation-specific aggression.

Statement of accuracy, utility, and common risks: This course is based on peer-reviewed and experience-based research and information. LaViolette's Continuum of Aggression and Abuse is used on the California Courts website as well as utilized in other countries. The research done by Holtzworth-Monroe and Stewart is a compilation study based on participants in batterer intervention programs. These are helpful tools, but certainly are limited to being helpful and not 100% predictive. There is a need for a trained professional to utilize the information and realize that it is only part of the picture.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: None.
