How Long Will This Take? Managing Expectations of Grief Process

Presented by Clara Anderson Sainte, LCSW, LSCSW on 04-14-2026 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Navigating the grieving process can be a deeply personal and often confusing journey. This continuing education course for mental health professionals is designed to provide clarity and guidance on the dynamics of grief duration and expectations.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar for therapists, Clara Anderson Sainte, LCSW, LSCSW will delve into the emotional, cognitive, and physical dimensions of grief, offering insight into why expectations about grief can differ widely among individuals and cultures. She will explore factors that influence these expectations, such as personal beliefs, societal norms, and past experiences, and explain tools to manage and adjust these expectations effectively.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Identify typical expectations people have about the grieving process and how these expectations can vary culturally and individually.
  2. Investigate factors such as personal beliefs, societal norms, and past experiences that shape one’s expectations related to grief.
  3. Explore available support systems, community resources, and professional help that can assist in managing grief expectations effectively.

Statement of accuracy, utility, and most common risks: This program presents research-informed clinical content related to grief and bereavement, grounded in established mental health best practices. The training is designed for mental health professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of grief processes, challenge common assumptions and expectations about grieving, and enhance their ability to support clients navigating loss. No prior specialized training in grief counseling is required. The program emphasizes application of course concepts within professional scope of practice and promotes clinically responsible, culturally responsive, and ethical use of the strategies presented. While the research reviewed supports the clinical utility of these approaches when thoughtfully applied, the presenter acknowledges that grief is highly individualized. Not all strategies are appropriate for every client, population, or context, and clinical judgment is essential to avoid pathologizing or oversimplifying diverse grief responses.
