Foundations for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Presented by Pamela D. Garcy, PhD, PLLC on 04-26-2019 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) is often considered the original cognitive behavioral therapy. REBT was founded by Dr. Albert Ellis in 1955 and preceded cognitive therapy and third wave cognitive therapies. REBT encourages clients to develop rational thinking so they can have a healthy expression of emotion and behavior.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Pamela D. Garcy, PhD, PLLC will explain how clinicians can build a solid foundation for learning how to use and apply REBT in their clinical work. One thing that distinguishes REBT from other therapies is its philosophical tenets. These allow REBT therapists to guide clients toward mental health, not just away from psychopathology.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the cognitive model, points of intervention, and what makes the client feel the way they do.
  2. Summarize the emotional goals of REBT and how to get there.
  3. Compare believing a belief, experimenting on a belief, or observing it.
  4. Discuss the behavioral goals of REBT, reactivity vs. creativity, and reducing bad habits.
  5. Describe later lifestyle goals of REBT and what REBT advocates to promote enduring mental health.
  6. Prepare to answer their case questions so they might begin to use some of the concepts in their practice.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: The contents of this program are based primarily upon publications on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and other cognitive behavioral modalities, in addition to research articles and application of concepts through practice at the level of experience and expertise she's developed to date. This program is not meant to be a substitute for ongoing learning, reading, preparation and supervision in this modality. The content being taught and illustrated through some of the case examples is by no means exhaustive, nor does it represent the only type of modality that can be effective. One risk is misapplication of the skills being taught due to misunderstanding of the modality, philosophy and/or techniques as applied to a specific individual. Therefore, participants are encouraged to approach application in a stepwise learning fashion and to seek proper skillful supervision.
