The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report suicide may be on the rise in the United States, with a 33% increase in deaths to suicide between 1999 and 2017. For U.S. residents under age 35, it’s the second leading cause of death. Worldwide, close to 800,000 people die by suicide each year.

Suicide risk assessment and suicide prevention training are important skills for most types of mental health professionals to keep in their toolkit. Some states, including Kentucky, Washington, and Utah may even require a certain number of continuing education units (CEUs) to cover suicidality. Required courses might cover general or specific topics, such as suicide prevention for veterans.

GoodTherapy offers a wide selection of continuing education courses on suicide and suicide prevention to help you meet your state’s licensure requirements or broaden your professional skill set. Available topics include how family therapy can address suicidality, how to use technology to manage risk of suicide, and more.
